    Some Dragon Tale Race Pics

Weather for the Dragon’s Tale race was quite beautiful, but maybe a little warm for many. Lots of folks out of water by the time they reached the Stone Coal Gap aid station set up by East Coasters Bike shop. I think I missed seeing the fastest riders as they came by before I got there. I took as many pics as I could of riders as they came in.

By this point, Grouse Trail had been climbed twice and that brutal stretch of North Mountain around the powerlines had been conquered – or not.

The rest of the racer pics are here.

    Onward – for most

    Jeff – Fat Biking it

McGuyver award. After the first creek crossings, this guy’s shoes delaminated. The whole front end of his one shoe came apart – to be replaced with a glove. The thought of those nasty hike-a-bike sections on Dragons Back with just one shoe puts tears in my eyes.

    The Sweepers sweeping, myself included

    Rocky ridge on Ferrier Trail

Some skinny off camber stuff, a Jefferson National Forest staple

    Interesting creek crossing

Some sweet buff sections of trail on out the New Castle end of Ferrier Trail.

    Out the bottom

    "Wildlife" Craig County style

The trails there look smooth and fast. Is that representative of most of the Roanoke/Blacksburg/Radford/Christiansburg area as well?

The ridge-top trails are very rocky. The side-hill trails are usually shaley, smooth and very fast.

The one blackwater bike shop rider in the first picture off the mountain is my friend Allen on a single speed.

Not sure how to ride that rocky ridge... and that interesting creek crossing - yea to say the least.
Enjoying the trails one pedal stroke at a time...

It is a mix. Some smooth and fast, some very rocky/rooty and technical. The ridge on Dragons Back (part of the race shown here) is very rocky. Pandapas in Blacksburg is very rocky in places. Some of the trails up at Mountain Lake are like pedaling across a boulder field.
15mm is a second-best solution to a problem that was already solved.

What are race courses generally like in VA/MD? Large single loop races, or WC-style, 7 times around a 5km lap?

Pretty sure there are some of both. Races in the national forest like Dragons Tale, Middle Mountain Mama, Shenandoah 100, and the one at Damascus are big loops that have very little repeat territory. I think some of the other races are muliti-loop on the same course.
