Short Loop ride on the Terrapin Mountain Predicament

The Terrapin Mountain Predicament ended up being last Sunday. The ride had been scheduled for Carvin’s Cove, but super muddy conditions force the change of local.

Virginia Endurance Series: 1.12.14 Terrapin Mountain Predicament | FREE Event #1 in Virginia's Mountain Biking Endurance Series

Thus far these rides have been in a number of locations in western Virginia. Usually I stay as far away from these rides as possible as they tend to be 40+miles and thousands of feet of climbing. I just don’t have that much gas in my tank.

They were looking for a guide for what we dubbed the “Underachiever loop”. 14 miles and 2300 feet of climbing – now we were talking my language.

    Started out on North Creek

I am going to guess about 20 riders, only 3 of us on the short loop. There was also a medium length one that several riders did.

    We are off

And this was the last I saw of most of them

    Onto North Creek Trail

    The short loop crew

Finishing up the singletrack for now.
Most of the rest of the climb is on the road.
Lots of water in the creeks

At the end of the road climb we had several welcome miles of rolling roadbed. I believe it is called the Cornelius Creek Connector.

Passing the AT and on to Cornelius Creek Trail

    Starts out rather innocent.

Its true rocky steep nature is soon revealed

After coming up on Cornelius Creek the steepness subsided somewhat, but the rocks were still there

The other guys rode the creek crossing, I wussed and walked it

The second creek crossing was really sketchy. I found my winter shoes do not grip well on wet logs. Much thanks to the guys for helping across that

In the clear on our way back to the truck

    The loop

Haha thought you might like that. The long loop was I think 42 miles with 10,000 feet of climbing. Our little wussy loop was just fine by me.

Yah, I'm glad I didn't take him up on the offer to lead that.... I am way out of condition at the moment. Looks like a place worth exploring though.
Enjoying the trails one pedal stroke at a time...

You should have come on. Being slow or out of shape would make you a perfect fit for a ride with the Underachievers.

Great area for riding with many trails not even on the map. No matter which route you take you're defiantly guaranteed plenty of climbing!

Such a beautiful area I keep going back. Since a lot of it is not mapped out singletrack there is a definite learning curve to riding in that area. Most rides there start with a 2000 - 2500 vertical foot climb, thinning out the non-believers.
