Where near the Baltimore/ Curtis bay area in MD is there a place to ride? All I can find are rails to trails. I'm looking for something a little more exciting than those. Qny help would be great. Im staying in the curtis bay area for about 3 months and will only have a bike for transportation. So please nothing to far away from Baltimore. Unless however the train system allows bikes.

It sucks, but bloody pond is right there and we go back there all the time. Mostly guys with dirt bikes and stolen cars. 2 weeks ago we saw a guy nailing a hooker on a junked tractor tire (no joke). The only place we like nearby is Patapsco. Send me a message if you want to ride sometime.

Hey BB23601. The trail at Lake Maury isknown to most people as Gatewood. It is a great place to ride, and a real plus being that close to your work. The best way to ride the trail is clockwise starting at the lot at the corner of Warwick Blvd and Gatewood Rd. Follow the trail as it hugs the lake generally all left turns. When the trail stops at the Waterworks road turn right and follow back to the parking lot. You may get lost but exploring is half the fun. There is almost 10 miles of trail here. Enjoy.

Directions to Wakefield from 270, the Germantown Area ?

I've been riding Schaeffer forever, I have a FS and HT. I hear Wakefield is similar, just longer loops. Can anyone please share the directions to Wakefield or give me a close address for GPS?

Wakefield will likely be a letdown compared to Schaeffer. It's not as pretty, and the loops are shorter. A portion of the trail has you riding through powerlines, right next to the beltway. Some of the trail is surfaced with some sort of concrete and rocks for armoring. To me, Wakefield is great to have nearby, but I wouldn't ever drive 45 minutes to get to it.

Have you ridden Fountainhead or Rosaryville? Either are more similar to Schaeffer (especially Rosaryville) than Wakefield, and Fountainhead is a ton of fun after the redesign of the front two loops. Rosaryville is a ~10 mile loop and Fountainhead is about the same (I believe).

Riding- Will be renting Niner Air9.
I have a BAMF 29er HT out in AZ. Once in a while you'll see me on a road bike (gasp!) or my beat up GT Marathon that I now realize is way to small for me but was my first purchase a couple yrs ago and didn't know what I was doing then.
    Trails- None yet

Hi all. I would have started a new thread but it wouldn't let me yet. Kinda new on here. I hope you can help still even though I'm 18 pages in. I'm coming on a work trip for a couple weeks (10-21 Sept), staying in Falls Church, VA and am trying to find all the groups/shops that put on rides for the week/weekend. I found the MORE site and the Bike Lane rides so far held mostly at at Wakefield, Shaffaer and the Patapsco (sp?). Can anyone list the groups/bike shops around the area putting on rides for the week/weekend? Interested in Sat/Sun groups rides especially. I'll be bringing my bike light and gear so night rides are an option. During the week need to stay close to Falls Church but on the weekend I'm willing to venture out. Suggestions on group rides on the wkend? Thanks everyone!

Very Nice Bikes. If your looking for someone to ride with I am as well and want to get out to some good trails. There is nothing down my way. I just got off crutch's today and need about a month to get my legs back.

Welcome to the site. Like you, I'm an ADV'r that has picked up mountain biking (again). I've found I get the same exhilaration from pedaling my way through the bush as I do twisting the throttle. Actually, I think more so. It's because I cover far less ground pedaling, which allows me to see the sights a bit more.

As for bikes, craiglist is the key. Hold out for the bike you want...it's out there.

I mainly ride Schaeffer. I can get SRT access from my back yard, and into Schaeffer from there, which is sweet. Also do some canal riding (with the wife). Looking to do the Muddy Branch Greenway, Black Hills and eventually Patapsco.

Currently just using my bike to get around. I am kinda afraid to take it singIe tracking until I can afford to replace what I know in my heart is going to break. I grew up in Potomac and I rode the trails along the river as a kid and teenager. I'm exited about just being back on a bike though.

Bryce Resort in the Shemandoah Valley. My apologies to the mods if this is inappropriate, but since my post on the certification program I've received a few PM's which I can't respond to due to non sufficient posting numbers. Asking about Bryce's plans. So here I go, hopefully won't be banned from the site and wil be here often as an avid Mtn and Road rider (I swear my post count will increase)

To answer the PM's I received,

Yes that's correct. As of this morning we are official. We'll be working with Gravity Logic out of Whistler who are friends of mine and we have also partnered with Trek on the demo fleet (Session 8's and Slash 8's). Our hope is to get design and long term plan done once we close for the ski season and have at least the first 3 trails by mid-June for opening with more coming on line shortly after. The park will be designed and built with an eye to introducing people to the sport up through advanced riders (reason for my post will need good instructors). We don't have a ton of vertical but I think we have a pretty cool atmosphere that people will enjoy. The park will have a variety of features as well. We made the announcement on our Facebook page this morning but we've been working on this for quite a while.

Let me know if you have any other questions, still a ton to do and organize, exciting times for our little neck of the woods!

I lived in SoCal for several years and honed my skills there with trips all over the SW including Moab, Sedona, and Mammoth Mountain. I've even ridden in places like Hawaii and Jamaica during vacations I've taken. My FS is a Giant VT1 '04 but it needs some work. Once I am back in shape I plan to move up to a 29er. Of all trails I've ridden, I love the local trail systems although I do miss long climbs rewarded with long rides back down. Long time listener to this site, but a first time caller! My Story: Grew up in Elkridge, rode Patapsco first time in 1992 on a Sear's special. Moved to College Park while attending UMCP, and bought a Specialized Hardrock. Met some dudes while in college, and we all became addicted...Rode all over campus, and then I took them to Patapsco. One of my buddies got a rock hopper with front suspension and was the man. I quickly followed with the above mentioned GT. Then we all did the clipless thing, and then we got old and jobs. The bike got garaged for about 4 years, until work shipped me to Fishkill, NY, where I became quickly bored out of mine. The GT got busted out again, and rode a few times up there, then came back, got married, and moved into our house less than a mile from one of Patapsco entrances...Rode a couple of times each year, then another friend went out and bought a new ride. Started riding more again, and now i'm back to riding every weekend I can (and finally convinced the wife to let drop some money on a new ride..)

    Roll call, y'all!

    Name: Lou
    Live: Frederick, MD
    Riding: 2013 Trek Marlin
Trails: Baker Park with my boys, but want to get out to real trails
My Story: Rode a Hutch BMX bike when I was younger and loved the freedom of riding. Got my driver's license and the bike got sold to support the car fund. Fast forward to now... I'm 40 and my 12 year old son just for a boys Trek MT220 MTB for his Birthday. I got one as an early b-day present for myself so we can ride together. He wants to ride trails but is a little afraid. Hopefully, we can find some light trails to get his feet wet not too far from Frederick.

Welcome Lou glad to see you are getting back into it and doing it with your son is a great reason for it. There are so many nice places to ride up your way and when you and your son do ride a trail for the first time take your time and learn the trail the first fee times and try not to go right after allot of rain.

Future Ride: some kind of 29er
Trails most likely to see me: Fair Hill, White Clay, below the dam (it's practically in my back yard)

Been riding on and off for many years hence the bike. Riding more regular now with friends. the Backroads has served me well but I need a new bike. Oh yeah, I love White Clay. Can't believe I never rode there until three weeks ago.

    Story:
Did some road biking way back when I was a teenager. Then found Tae Kwon Do in my early 20's graduating to bodybuilding since then. I'm now 38 years old and this past Christmas decided I needed more cardio since I like craft beer too much and was getting fatter than I'd like.

I ended up with a $300 2005 Giant Rainier off of CL that I quickly upgraded the fork and brakes on. I also converted a set of Dusters to tubeless and enjoyed the love of sub 25psi tire pressures on technical trails.

I've recently sold the Giant and now have an Airborne Goblin 29er. I've seen the light! What a difference. Now I just wish I had lighter wheels I could go tubeless on.

I've already swapped out the bars for 710mm Carbon risers, a shorter 80mm stem and a lighter seatpost, all from Control Tech.

My Story: Started mountain biking during the most recent December (2013) and instantly fell in love with it. I then broke the bike I was using (about 15 years old) and just bought myself a new bike and pumped to try it out!
