Riding near Smith Mtn. Lake area

I am going to a wedding in May at Smith Mountain Lake, which seems to be near Rocky Mount. Are there any good trails in that area?

    Thanks!

I am about three hours away so I have never ridden the trails, but I hear that the Carvins Cove trail system is pretty awesome. Several people that I have met on local trails have told me that it is some of the best in the state.

Here is a link to the single tracks page: Carvin's Cove Trail system Mountain Bike Trail in Roanoke, Virginia || SINGLETRACKS.COM

Not much on that side of Roanoke, Waid Creek Park in Rocky Mount is the only thing i can think of and there seems to be little info on line on that. I would recommend Explore Park or Mill Mountain for short rides, Carvin's Cove for an all dayer. We ride from Day Creek parking lot near Montvale for all day back country Jefferson National Forest rides, but a guide would be recommended for that - poor trail markings.

He could also hit Angler's Ridge in Danville.... It wouldn't be all that far from Rocky Mount... or IC Dehart Park in Woolwine.
Enjoying the trails one pedal stroke at a time...

Thanks for the input everybody. The wedding is next Saturday. I have to be back at my hotel and dressed to catch a bus at 2 in Rocky Mount. So which of these trail systems would give me a shot at getting a 2 hour ride in without getting lost and being back at the Holiday Inn in RM by 1:30 or so?

Or would I be better off just bringing a road bike?

Maybe Explore Park. It is easy to find and you could ride most of it in that time frame. Just stay off the River/Expert loop, it is a mess.

I rode Waid in Rocky Mount for a couple of hours this morning. Nothing too exciting, but there was a few miles of decent trail and it was only 6 miles from the hotel. Thanks for the lead on that.

Re: Riding near Smith Mtn. Lake area

I had a chance to ride those areas about a month ago when I did the SDS tour with Shenandoah Mountain Touring. Good fun, even if it did kick my rear end.
