Real trails near the Virginia Creeper Trail?

I would like to camp near Damascus for a few days with my son and ride the creeper trail in the end of April. Of course, that will only occupy one afternoon. I plan to do some MTB riding and AT hiking on the other days.

I would like to find a campground near some good xc singletrack if that exists in the area. He can handle some fairly technical riding. I was looking at the Beartree Recreation Area campground but I'm not sure if there is any real singletrack nearby.
Any local knowledge would be appreciated.

Beartree sits right in a web of great singletrack, just pick up a trail map at one the shops in Damascus.

Be warned that none of the maps are terribly accurate.

Thanks for the warning. Are these rolling trails or long climbs with long descents? Anything technical or gnarly or mainly XC?

I can't speak to specifics, I do know that I have two coworkers who like the trails, and they're more into technical riding than I am. The coworkers were the ones that passed on the warning about the maps. I ride more in the Wytheville area.

The Iron Mt. trails are also in Damascus. Right next door to the Creeper.

I rode them a couple years ago. Challenging but fun.

Here's a link to a map- camping at Beartree puts you in a good spot. 20 min drive to town for Creeper Shuttles/Restaurants/etc. Lum Trail, Shaw Gap Trail, or Beartree Gap Trail (all three come out of Beartree)will connect you to the Iron Mtn. Trail.
