Race in Patapsco 3/28/09 - AFC Sugar Hill XC

I came across this last night. No course details yet on bikereg but here is the link. I have an idea of the course because I rode the proposed course with the organizers. Anyone know what the final route will be? Def have to do this one! Limited to 100 people so sign up early. Who is in?

    It's on the 28th, not the 8th.

I'm very likely to be in on this.

This is going to be a great race and it goes towards a great cause! It's a shame Patapsco only allows 100 people max to race because it sure is a nice venue. The Adventures for the Cure guys are super cool, make sure to check out their website. www.adventuresforthecure.com and check out their video.

The course is a little different.....but it's basically the route we did on the "Organized" ride. The last part/s of the loop are what might change from our ride that day. Adam and Blair (the Cure guys) are very good people with a great reason to have a race. Please come out and do their race....it's one of the few chances you have to race at Patapsco and it's for a great cause. It is part of the M.A.S.S. race series, but with the limitations on the racers it will not be scored for the overall points chase in that series. Not sure why the "Park" held the entries to such a small number, they used to have races there all the time in the late nineties. Hopefully this race will change their minds and bring racing back to Patapsco

I wanted to. Thinking I should race the SS category?

I can't help but feel pretty intimidated considering what I'll likely be up against.

Yeah if you've never raced SS class, it is extremely competitive...most of the time the "top" times for a race come out of the SS class...you'd be fine riding your SS in the Beg. group (actually have a little advantage) SS does really well in racing...then after a few under your belt jump on up with the "gang"..your pretty strong with it considering thats pretty much all you ride (even your Cannondale)...
My first Sport race was with my SS last year in the "Sport SS" class...OMG...when the horn went off I think I was the only guy at the line....all the other SSer's were 100' feet away sprinting...came in next to last that day out of 20+ in the group...It was a very humbling 3-4 months of racing...but I did get pretty strong...by the end of their season (left CA with still 4 races left) I finished up 6th overall out of 20+...
Your call...keep in mind though "DO IT FOR THE FUN" then it'll all be okay anyway you do it...

yeah, thats the attitude i took with cross and the real fun was improving my finishes. considering it was my first season it was fun to see myself pass people whose wheel i was glued to a month earlier.

besides, cross is full of sandbaggers anyway

I'll give the SS category a go after a few under my belt. beginner will be fun and, my first race, I'll really just be racing myself out there.

MisterC...Jeremy Bishop (pro for Trek/VW) told me that within the first 5 that get off the start one in that group of 5 is always the winner...out of all the races last year I was in he was right, I mentioned that to you guys right before your start and look what happened. ..

Yeah, I couldn't take it watching all you guys sign-up...but come on guys..."Beginner"...come on your all faster/better than that...ya got skill, ya ride Patapsco ALL the time, and your all certainly young enough and healthy enough...give yourself not only a challenge BUT much more bang for your $30 bucks...
Besides, don't let all those strangers spank my ass, I'd much rather get beat by someone I know...

Looks like 100 riders have already signed up and registration is closed.

But those who missed this can give the Rockburn Reloaded race a shot. Right across the road from Patapsco and 6 days earlier: http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=7681

We ride Patapsco Alot, as it is our backyard! The trails have been horrible as of late and should not be ridden on, but many people have on those warm days which has made them very rutty.

We rode tonight and they are MUCH better. We will be riding the Race loop As much as we can the next month. If you would like to join just watch for our posts in the Patapsco thread.

Do You have lights? Want to join us tomorrow night?

Chris is signed up for both races as anyone can see.

I was just around Chris for the past 30 mins and he did say he is signed up for them. So we know it is not some person using a fake name.

Weatherman – tell us if the trails will dry out by Saturday and if the rain will hold off on Saturday, long enough for the races to finish? To my non-weather forecasting self it looks like we might just have the window we need to get the racing in.

    hey all

So i know that everyone is bummed about the rain (and almost near certain cancellation of our race). Let's plan something fun on April 25th. (As far as I know, there are no races this day)

I am talking about a Bikes & Bbq @ Patapsco. Get out there mid morning & slam the Baltimore side, come back bbq lunch, hit ho-co. Then more riding. We could even do some one lap races towards the end if we feel like it.

I will take charge of making sure we get the pavilion, and procuring charcoal. If everyone bring some hot dogs then we all get a nutritious meal.

    Let's get this going.

I am trying to be an optimist so here it goes! Last time it rained ˝ inch (last week) the trails recovered in 1 day. With that said if it stops raining tonight and the sun comes out tomorrow morning with the warm temps (in the 60’s) I think the trails will dry out before the races start. Remember, the plants/trees are sucking up all the moisture they can as they begin to grow again and this greatly helps deplete the water in the soil. Also, the ground is completely thawed so we will not have a situation where the water sits on top the frozen soil. On Saturday morning the sky will be clear and the threat is only from a passing shower/thunderstorm later in the day.

The real test will be what the trails are like on Friday night. I think that will be the decision maker.

    Update:

FROM: AFC Sugar Hill XC (Patapsco Valley State Park)
    -------------------------------------------------

    Hi Everyone,
Patapsco State Park will make a decision by 11am tomorrow on whether or not the race will be canceled. If it is canceled look forward to having the race on April 5th (our official rain date).

I will send out another email tomorrow at 11:30am (or whenever Patapsco gets back to me) to let everyone know if the race is on or not.

Please be sure to check your email tomorrow!

The raffle for the Maverick SC32 MTB Fork will be extended until next Saturday if the race is canceled.

    http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=7911

    Thanks!

I think the BBQ is a great idea.

The race is out of my hands entirely. The only question is, if the race goes off and it is muddy as hell, will I still ride?

Probably, but I'll complain the whole time.

The trails have been super dry this week so here's hoping that the ground will suck up all the moisture like a giant ShamWow!

If not, we get one more week to train.

I for one - will not. I learned my lesson at O Hill. Besides the park people have to know how bad it gets when it rains... Shamwow or No Shamwow if the course sucks i'm gonna pass.

Life and Liberty, you should start a thread called Bikes & Bbq @ Patapsco so we don't confuse people who are reading this thread trying to find info on the AFC race, etc.

Roughly 6.5 miles. Two laps for sport and three for expert.

    Good Luck

I will be watching for the Email tomorrow afternoon. I would assume if the Park says No at 1130 it would be soon after the mass email goes out.

We had a very slow and steady soaking rain here today. After work tomorrow if the race is not canceled, I am going to go down and walk the course and see how mucky it is. May be time for wheelset/tire change.

Jason, the one thing I dislike about changing wheelsets is the annoyance that I must go through with re-adjusting the calipers. The rotors on the Stans wheelset with his hubs are that slightly different offset.

That is the only pain. U will have to adjust yours also? If it is anywhere near mucky our tires on our Stans wheelset will not do well, even more so yours!

Yep, I have to adjust everything also. Should only take a few minutes. I def wont be running the Stans Ravens if we have mud. BUT, I think things are drying out Will have to wait and see what the Park says at 11:30.

OH YEA!!! I am going to checkout the trails at 5 pm and then make my tire selection.

FROM: AFC Sugar Hill XC (Patapsco Valley State Park)
    -------------------------------------------------

    Hi everyone,

Patapsco State Park has just told us that the race is ON for tomorrow!! Patapsco State Park is responsible for making the decision to cancel the race. They did a thorough assessment of the trails, and looked at the forecast for tomorrow, and they have concluded that the trails are in good enough condition for our race.

Please take the time to check out the registration page for all the details about what is going on and when it is happening:
    https://www.bikereg.com/events/regis...p?EventID=7575

    Thanks! See you all tomorrow!!

Well, stopped in the park to walk up water bar and a little of Rockburn. This was at 530pm and the trails were damp but not slippery mud. There was no one setting anything up or even course markings what so ever?

The thing that does suck, is that steady rain is falling here next to the park and radar shows alot more coming overnight. Bring you MUD skillz.

See you all in the AM.

considering that it's been raining for several hours -- and looks like it'll be raining for a couple more hours -- i have my doubts that the trails will be good condition for a race. maybe they'll make an assessment of trail conditions early tomorrow morning...

regardless, i'll be out there on an orange cannondale hardtail...say hi if you see me!

I can't make the rain date because I am out of town next weekend so if someone wants my spot let me know.

Yeah I hope it doesnt rain much, if at all this week. Would have been a muddy race yesterday if it would have gone on. Will they have another rain date if the trails aren't rideable again on sunday?

I am not aware of another rain date. I would think it would just be canceled if rain/mud is present this Sunday. I am fine with that. Giving money for a good reason is great in my book!
