October Ride in the Blue Ridge

A week ago me and some NC buds hit up a local favorite, Spec Mines and Dody Ridge figure 8 double loop. Starts with about a 2.5 mile climb.

    The crew

    Close to the top

Black Horse Gap, an encounter with about 15 horses and riders went well.

Normally there is a great view of the Peaks of Otter here, but today too many clouds

Getting ready for our first singletrack of the day

Some steep and rocky towards the bottom

[A stop on the Couch trail

Climbing Black Horse Gap from the other side now.

Heard an o-oog-ga from behind and then got passed by a whole crew of cool antique cars on the Blue Ridge Parkway

Onto Dody Ridge, a locals favorite

Looking back at the sandstone slabs on the Blue Ridge Parkway

The crew dealing with a mechanical on the final descent

Another great ride in the Blue Ridge.

That's one of the best rides in the area, the views and singletrack are world class. I broke my helmet and a rib last month on Dody and still enjoyed the ride. It's that good!!

I made it to mineshaft on Monday. Awesome trail CCR! The leaves are getting thick on the trail, but still had a blast.

Best wishes for a rapid recovery on the rib, I recall how badly that hurts having broke at least 3 or 4 over the years skiing or biking.
I hope the helmet did its job.

Thanks for the well wishes, my rib is barely noticeable now and my helmet definitely did its job. One benefit is the broken rib really forces you to practice deep belly breathing, which has really improved my climbing speed.

Hey I'm the one you guys called "youngblood" haha. Just thought I'd share the video footage I pulled together. This is just of the Spec Mines section we did. Still working on the Dody Ridge footage. Should be up soon. Anyways, let me know what you think!

Pretty cool Brendansucks. 7:52 looks rather painful, but you brushed it off and rode on - good job. Thanks for posting. Look forward to the Dody decline.

October Ride in the Blue Ridge

I grew up in VA, and still have family there. I remember October as the best time of year. One of these trips back, I should ship my bike and spend a few days re-acquainting myself with the Blue Ridge or the Valley & Ridge / Allegheny Front. I'm blown away by how wide the trails are in these photos!

Yeah it seems those rocks got the best of me. At least it was only my phone that received damage rather than my hip or something..

Lots of riding opportunities in the area. Trail width varies a lot. A whole lot of the back country trails were built as mining and timbering roads and have grown over and become singletrackish. Dody Ridge was built as a horse trail with probably a mini-dozer. On the other hand, the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corp) trails built in the 1940s tend to be just wide enough to get through with a bike. The upper end of Spec Mines is like that, as well as Douthat, Dragons Back, Price and Patterson Mountain, etc. Bring that bike back and have some fun. Where are you at now?

October Ride in the Blue Ridge

Montana. I had a MTB back in the late 80s through early/mid 90s when I left, but there wasn't much of a scene and I was mostly a backpacker. I tended to skip over the Blue Ridge and head farther west. I'd like to revisit the landscape from a different perspective.

Thanks man I certainly appreciate it! If there are ever any big rides you're planning up in GSO or anywhere else I'll have to drive up and see what that area's all about. And now I know where to contact you as well.

Thanks for putting this together. It looks as rocky on the video as I remember it. That stick you caught about 1:20 could have ended your day.
