    Night riding in Delaware?

I live near White Clay Creek and Fair Hill MD, both great places to ride but being state parks they officially close at sunset. Is there anywhere in this area that I could do trail riding at night? I haven't done it before but it's something I'd like to try, especially now that it gets dark so early that I can't get a ride in after work. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Night riding in Delaware?

If you look at a map, in the center of white clay creek state park is a county section called middle run. It's between paper mill rd and Polly Drummond hill road . That's the ok area (as far as I know) to night ride. I have over the years and it's great fun.

I always thought, possibly incorrectly, that Middle Run was part of WCC. I'll have to look into that, I ride Middle Run pretty frequently and would be perfect if I can ride there at night. Thanks.

It looks like it is county land, but New Castle County appears to have the same rule regarding closing at night.

    http://www2.nccde.org/Parks/ParkDocuments/ParkRules.pdf

"Sec. 24.01.002. Presence in parks after dark.
No persons are permitted in any park during the hours of darkness, except in
those areas designated for extended use activities or unless written permission is
obtained from the Department of Special Services for after-dark programs.
    (Ord. No. 98-050, § 1(24-2), 5-26-1998)"

No idea how or if it is enforced, but in any case I'm open to other suggestions for places to ride.

Darn. What about Woodlawn up next to Brandywine? Doesn't that have a National Park designation now? Night riding is allow in National Forests last time I checked.

William M Redd? It's short but fun. It's not county or state - it's City of Newark.

Middle Run, for whatever reason seems to be OK. Don't venture into Judge Morris, White Clay, or Fair Hill.

The only legitimate night riding is if you get the secret handshake from the Delaware Trailspinners.

My battery is a no go. I either need a new light or new battery pack.

Redd is a no-go. At one time, Newark Police would be sitting at either end ready to give out tickets.
Thanks to www.weavercycleworks.com for my awesome bike frames!

Just read this about WCC night riding:
DNREC will extend hours until 8:30 p.m. during a trial period from that began Nov. 22 and will run through April 30. Trail access is permitted at Smith Mill Road, Bryans Field Trail, Whitely Farms Trail, Creek Road and the Pomeroy Trail form North College Avenue to Hopkins Road. Parking will be available at Wedgewood Road and Nine-Foot Road for extended trail users only.

Anyone have any info? What happens if i park @ Middle Run or the Whitely Farms parking lot? I don't know where Smith Rd,Wedgewood or Nine-Foot Rd is.

Wedgewood Road isn't near any bike friendly trails, so I wouldn't bother parking there.

Nine Foot Road parking is just down the street from Middle Run, maybe a 2 minute drive, and puts you right on Whitley Farms Trail. It's a gravel road just across from Deerfield Golf Course, if you are looking at Google Maps it's called Fairhill School Drive.

You can see the official rules here: http://www.destateparks.com/download...l%20Access.pdf

It mentions you are supposed to get a permit to ride after dark, I believe they are free and I don't know if they are enforced. Hope this helps.

You can get the extended hours permits from the Nature Center/Park Office at White Clay at the intersection of Thompson Station Rd & Chambers Rock Rd. You can also get them from the Brandywine Park Office. There is no fee, just a waiver to sign and some rules to agree to. I urge anyone who thinks they might be interested in this to get a permit. This is a "trial run" that may continue based on the amount of interest generated. The more presence we make, the better!
