Newly re-opened stretch of Helms Trail on Patterson Mountain

Got a chance to work with the Junior MTB Team supported by East Coasters a couple of weeks ago.

They wanted to help with opening the Price Mountain and Patterson Mountain trail system of which myself and Roanoke IMBA have been working on for a while.

We worked on the lower part of Helms trail, below where Loop trail intersects it. We were asked by the Forest Service to not re-open the upper part of Helms as well as the Loop trail due to poor construction. Kapusta and I both really liked the lower part of Helms and thought it was worthy of re-opening.

Kapusta, myself and the Forest Service trail specialist walking the line in snake and tick season.

    The group

This stretch of trail was in good shape except for being quite grown over

A few hours later and it was ready to roll

It had to be properly approved by some wheels

A few more from yesterday in prime leaf season

Thanks again to all the kids and their dads for coming out to work on this old classic trail system

Hopefully we can get the Forest Service to put some signs up soon or at least give us some signs.

Probably the best way to roll this mini-loop (about 2 miles) is to go up FS 5016 about a mile and turn left on the small chunk of Loop trail up to Helms, left again on Helms. FS 5016 goes through several wildlife clearings that have roads leading into them. Stay in the middle lane until the FS road takes a hard right and trailhead is on the left. There are yellow blazes on trees at or near the turn.

More to come on this trail system in the future............
