Looking for a summer vacation location

Trying to plan a week in June to bring the family to Virginia for some riding, tent camping. Can anyone recommend a spot that has riding close by? We would also like to be able to get into DC for some sight seeing during the stay, so driving distance to city or rail would be a factor. Thanks

Lake Fairfax is probably what you are looking for. It has camping and riding in the same location. Not sure when the silver line will be open in 2013, but when it does open, it's just a block over from one of the trailheads as well. The trails there are tame, not super technical or anything but still a good time.

Pocahontas state park near Richmond. Approx 20 miles of singletrack in the park. Plenty of trails in downtown Richmond. Check out terrain360.com

It may be a bit longer of a drive, but the Allegrippis trails network near Raystown Lake, PA has 30+ miles of trails for every level of XC rider with camping VERY close to the trailhead. The trails are fast and flowy, clearly marked, and have very little tech to them.

Also, there's a nice lake to swim in right after your ride.

edit: It's also less than a four hour drive from DC, so you can easily head there afterwards and link up with 95 for your drive home.

Having been to all of the above recommended parks, all are outstanding options for riding. If your criteria is the DC metro area: Allegrippis and Poca are too far away. A decent camping experience within a 30 min drive of DC may be harder to find (look at Cedarville SP in MD). If you extending the drive to an hour or so, a couple excellent options come to mind - Greenbrier SP, Little Bennett Regional Park in MD. Check out our website for places to ride in VA - GpsTrailSource.com. Enjoy your vacation!!!

Have you thought about camping in Patapsco MD? I think you can ride right from the campsites and DC is about a hour.
