January 1 2013 Carvins Cove ride started out a little tilted and fuzzy, as first of the year rides often do.


As we went along, more traction was gained


Up Arrowhead




Group meeting at the top


Up Brushy for a little ways


Group split apart at 4 Gorges Extension


A couple of the guys had not ridden this before


Remaining Crew, the slow crew myself included








Back down Girl Scout, across lower Comet – that was really the only trail that was overly wet. Across Enchanted Forest and Little Bell – Schoolhouse


Lake is awful low

Briefly checked out a new trail that goes from the Boat Dock to Hollins, will have to try that on another day.


I think this January 1 ride has been going on around 20 years, but it was a first for me. Nice way to start the year.

Very cool pic's! I got to do a night ride to the top on New Years eve. To see the city down below at night is pretty awesome. A little snow was still on the ground up there also.

The parking area, just off the interstate near the Hollins exit


And yes, you have to have a permit to use this one too. I think there is a drop box there too. I like the idea of being able to ride from that area - it is easier for a lot of us to get to than the other 2 parking areas. Other than over and back I don't know what else you could hook into - aside maybe Green Ridge.

Starting at the Hollins trailhead, the trail wanders up through an old farm



Out of the farm and into the woods

After a short climb, the trail follows a powerline for a good ways

Tinker mountain in the distance, but a fair number of houses along the way


You can hear the electricity as you pass under the tower

Near the top

Off the west side of the ridge, and away from the houses and the noise of I-81

Nicely built but still a little mushy when I rode it


The trail sidehills on down to the lakeside

Some bridging

Along the lake



Eventually you roll out into the boat dock parking lot. I would guess 2 - 2.5 miles long
