I have rules that I live by in the winter here in NoVa. Dirt when well below freezing and gravel or road bike when above.
That way I always end up having great mountain bike conditions/rides and no guilt. And I have found over the years that the other options will scratch that itch until the next frosty ride presents itself.
It does require super early start times but that is a minor concern for the trade off.
Some pics from friends showed the Fredneck trails in great condition yesterday. Some snow but froze-up.
Weather-watching time of year.
