    Black Friday Longdale Ride

Black Friday is different for different folks. Ours was a calorie burning ride to remove some Thanksgiving overindulgence.

We parked at the Longdale recreation area.

Warmed up on the pavement, stopping to check out the remnants of the Lucy Selina Furnace

Then FS 770 for a tough 3 mile climb

Admiring the cool rockwork on the old wagon road

Amazing what the temperature difference is between the sunny and dark side of the hollow

At the top, onto singletrack for about a 6 mile ridge ride

The first few miles could be arguably the most scenic mountain bike ride in Virginia

Just don’t fall off the rocks

Sweet singletrack that seems to always be going up

    House and Little House mountains

Into what is called Petes Cave

Not really a cave, more a chasm and rock formation, it is a tough climb into and a tough climb out of – the trail goes right through it

We were all glad there was not any more snow or ice

At the top, a fine view towards Clifton Forge and points west

The furnace ruins are right below us

Another mile of ridge, and then the descent

    Tight GWNF singletrack awaits

A little bit of Dereckto leftoverage

Onto doubletrack for most of the rest of the ride

Quite a few trees to navigate on this stretch also

But most of it is pretty good

Coming towards the end, some more trails to explore – Yaccers Run and Anthonys Knob look like another days exploration

Another fine national forest adventure ride

I've often thought of exploring there but never pulled the trigger. Good adventure CCR.

Check it out sometime, it is definitely worth the trip. The short loop is only about 8 miles, our loop was 13.5 miles, and it can be combined with White Rocks for about a 25 mile double loop. Also, it is only about 20 minutes from Douthat.

Excellent Black Friday idea. That's exactly what I did, only I had to "settle for" Montgomery Bell park in TN. Looking forward to being back near the GW at the end of the month. I'm thinking it's Reddish Knob time. I always enjoy seeing your pictures.

Now that looks like the proper way to spend "Black Friday".
