    XTR FD-M901 custom clamp oddness

Ok, so a recent eBay purchase left me with this. Clamp marked 34.9, but when it was WAY too big for my seat tube I looked closer. Other 34.9 clamps fit the bike just fine.

To my untrained eye it appears that someone went to the trouble of making a new hinged clamp band on this unit.

The edges are squared off compared to the rounded surfaces everywhere else, the finish is also different - without the polish present on the rest of the unit. A google image search confirms this.

The seller is being very cool about it, and I'll probably return it since it doesn't work - but someone (before them) went to a lot of trouble to do this - and they did a pretty decent job.

Was there some brand way back then that might have had these made for a non-round seat tube? Anybody have any ideas?

That looks like the custom clamp used for oversized seattubes in that period like Manitous, etc.

Great score. You never know when you'll need one.

yeah - but it doesn't fit my normal round-tubed 34.9 Slingshot very well!

So did Shimano make these, or did the specific manufacturer (Manitou, etc)? The 34.9 engraving is still present in the fixed portion of the band, which led me to believe that only the other part was modified. It's still useless to me, but I'm sort of curious now.

Answer-Manitou made the swinging piece. They also used the endless band style derailleur, which was just an XT derailleur with an XTR logo.

You can use this if you make a 1/16" thick shim out of aluminum or hard plastic.
