kinda neat to see some old bikes. seems to be mountain bikes setup for regular riding and they decided to try to ride down an icy slope.

Yeah, we had one DH rider who rode in the World Cup back then (The guy on the GT RTS in the video) and everyone else were weekend warrior types, the only way we knew that DH bikes were set up differently was from reading UK Mountain bike magazines (Internet wasn't a big thing in NZ in 93 haha) so when we held DH races, it was always raced on regular store bought (i.e. cheap) mountain bikes haha.

Oh how times have changed in regards to racing in NZ!

Looks a lot different than what you have available these days at Queenstown Bike Park.

I rode in a DH mountain bike race on snow (1991 Bikes and Bumps - Arapahoe Basin, Colorado) and know the feeling of the front wheel dropping through the crust like several of those guys experienced. I believe my landing was softer, though, and the moguls kept us from sliding as far.

Reminds me of the downhill race between mountain bikers and cross country skiers that used to go on in Anchorage, Alaska in the mid 90s. Skiiers usually won... grrr....

And you retro dudes would have loved the 2.5 umma gumma tires i was running in that race :-)

thats some cool footage...it looks like it was real icy......been there and looked the same. I ride in snow every winter...new, well packed snow is as fast as dirt...quads make berms on every turn too...and great jumps....just gotta land soft.

Did anybody actually finish the race?...it looks very difficult.

I remember doing a race like that up at Rainbow around then. Only a guy on a San Andreas had any sort of control.
