I admit my old bike is above average; a very early '90s Litespeed, I've got a Judy SL w/ kronos springs in it, 7 speed XT (thumbs), 180mm ritchie/sugino cranks, first gen Spd pedals, I did put later '90s xtr V brakes on it quite a while ago. I built the wheels a long time ago using db ritchie (dt) 14/16 spokes and RM395s.
I raced it a couple of times last fall during cyclocross instead of my sworks tri-cross (similar finishes).
I've been absent from mtb racing for a LONG time, I bought a 'new' race bike over the winter ('08 kona 29er hardtail), but raced the Litespeed yesterday. I was able to put it on the podium (2nd) in 40+ Cat2, it's just as fast as my Kona, weighs about exactly the same (both 25.5 on my scale, both xl, all the parts are light but they're only marginally light bikes...).
It is fun to mix it up with the $6000 carbon bikes on a old 21sp bike with narrow (Kona ti) bars!
I think your old bike still wants to be raced.
