I'm recently going through my collection of 'retro' stuff and pulled out these two FS/Mag forks, one of which I'll be putting on my '93 stumpjumper.
Travel appears the same on both (~1.5"). The grey one is the Rockshox Mag casing (although with the raised "S" logo in a couple spots), but I'm not sure about the silver one (magnesium or something else?)... a 'special'ized version of the mag casing?
The silver one appears in the '93 German Specialized catalog.
So, are these basically Mag10's or 30's? What's the difference between 10 & 30?
The air seals are shot on one of 'em & the other is holding air... for now. I do have a rebuild kit w/ the air caps.
I've forgotten how to pull apart the top cap/seal and couldn't find my notes on how to do it, anyone help with this? It's been 10 yrs since I've worked w/ a Mag fork, aside from changing oil.
I know D8 used to have all the mods on his site... twas good stuff!
Also, what are some alternatives for replacing the 'membrane' in the air cap thingy (where the needle inserts)?
Thanks!
Serge
The silver ones are basically RS1's. The cap seals are really hard to find.
The gray one is hard to say. I's more likely equivalent to a Mag 30, unless there is a dial on the top...can't tell from your pic.
Also might be an elastomer fork...
Either way, inster a 2 inch X 6mm bolt a few turns in the topcap of the silver one and tap it with a hammer until it slips down a 1/4 inch or so. Remove the circlip with a screwdriver or whatever (patience is your friend here) and then re-insert that 6mm bolt from before and yank out the cap with some vise grips using the bolt.
Now, drain the oil by holding the fork upside-down and pumping it through its travel.
To dis-assenmbe the rest, you either need a rockshox Mag tool kit or you can also do it by re-inserting the top cap and circlip, removing the main circlip at the top of the slider, carefully holding the slider in a vise, firmly gripiing the stanchion with your hand in a rag at the stanchion/slider junction and pumping the fork up to a high pressure with the pump.
CAREFUL HERE, THOUGH. It wil disengage quite violently, and you could take an eye out.
You're best off with the proper tools. Ask a local shop. They may dust them off for you and either lend them to you, or do the job for you for pretty cheap. The old greying mechanic may actually enjoy it. I know I would.

Thanks for the info Richie!
Neither of them has the dial, so that's why I was figuring a mag30/10, although I've only used 20/21's back when (w/ dials).
I could tell there was a circlip in there, but wasn't sure how to access it, so tapping it down to get to the circlip makes sense now.
There is one decent old shop in town, I'll give 'em a ring to see if they've got the tools.
I've got a mag 20 around too, so maybe I'll stick with this one, at least it's more adjustable.
So, the mag30 was basically the same as a 20 but w/o the adjustable valve, eh?
the travel boost mods are actually still on my page but for leaks and overhauls I'd suggest you contact hippietech. They likely own the tools at least to pull the forks apart.

heh, I just found my saved file of your old webpage w/ the mods for the mag21... dated 2002.
I can't seem to load the infoweb.magi webpage that I've got book marked. I guess it got moved, eh?
I also just found my RS service manuals for the Mag10/21 and early model Judy's if anyone want's em. PDF files, just pm me...
I'll host 'em if I ever get around to making some webpages.

Believe it or not D8, I've got a friend still riding around on the carbon Judy FSX, a big guy. Whoooo--scary! But it was all redone by angryasian with air carts and a carbon ShockBone brace--pretty nice, all in all. Light. Lucky it's in Illinois, I suppose. Best wishes.
I have a front shock Mag 30 (similar the gray one). It is shot. I really want to repair it. Do you know where i can the part to fix it.
Thank.
