Rode down Pikes Peak~ blowout at 58mph.

I'd just like to share my experience with you all of having the pleasure to ride down Pikes Peak last Thursday. Did it on an old crusty Kona too.
It's huff and puff at the top just riding around in the parking lot- I've never been this high up before. There were 3 hills along the way down and normally, they wouldn't have even made me stand up but I couldn't make the 2nd one. I guess living near sea level has made me weak.
At any rate, the scenery is lovely and even though the speed limit is only 25mph, I was able to hit 58mph on a big stretch and then had a rear tire blowout. Kinda scary but managed to steer the bike through oncoming traffic and slid off the road on the uphill side.
When I do it again next tyear, I'll be bringing the old VRC Burner and some better tires and a goal of trying to break 70 mph.

I agree. I went with my father who obviously couldn't do it, but after speaking with some people and seeing some vids of the trail, I'll definitely be doing the Barr going down.

I agree with the above posts that it was dangerous and certainly could have more catastrophic results but hey, WTF?! may as well try to go as fast as possible till that next curve. Anyone here would probably do the same.
Next year will include full protective wear and full face helmet. The bike I rode was a hardtail and not a lot of fun. I'll be using the old FS Burner and switching to cable discs for the ride. My tire pressure on the hardtail was only 40 psi and I felt I could have gotten much faster with higher pressures and more of a slick tire instead of knobbies.
    70mph here I come.

Mmmm....not so sure. Most people here have been riding for many, many years and have developed a reasonable amount of judgement. Most here aren't 22 years old and don't heal so fast as they did and my guess, is that most would say, that 58mph on questionable tires is not such a good idea. Oh, and full face helmet in a 70mph crash, well, that just make the mortuary's job easier in case of an open coffin.

I'm almost 50, overweight, and can go balls to the wall given the right circumstances.
This was one of those times.

You should definitely use a T-disc when you make this attempt.

Well if he does, make sure you have a few people video it with something that captures sound well. Also maybe you can mount a camera on the bike with a mic running towards the rear wheel.

Not necessarily - Tomac, Tinker, Missy, etc used them regularly on downhill high speed runs.
