Old french leather saddle with cardboard glued to underside?

What is this about? Is it cared for any differently than a brooks?

That is probably a different grade of rawhide leather under there, not cardboard. I have a saddle which looks just like this one, except that the underside leather has pulled loose at the front. I plan to care for it just like my Brooks, after I fix it.
