    my $40 VRC-ish city bike

    my VRC-ish city bike-100_2607.jpg
I got two Schwinn Crosscuts for $40 each. Here is the first one, a '90. I just took all the lights and racks and odometers off it, cleaned it and put on Ritchey grips and a Brooks I had.

I'll update it this winter, but for now I ride it in all it's Exage-tastic glory.

For now it has a 38mm tire in front and a 40mm in back. Surly has a 700c x 41mm Knard coming out that think might fit.

    It's heavy. It's dorky. It's a lot of fun.

Nice looking bike, and interesting street art in the background.
Each bicycle owned exponentially increases the probability that none is working correctly.

Thank you, Laffeaux! Here is a better shot of the art. It's on the far south side of Chicago, along an paved bike path called the Major Taylor Trail.

Great idea to have beaters. My neighbor wanted to borrow one of my bikes the other day and I have to admit, I was a bit worried...

I'm not saying yours is a beater, especially now that you added a Brooks to it. But at least you haven't spent to fortune on it, yet.

No, beater covers it just fine. You should see the other one. It's been flogged. Half the charm of them is that they are basically free fun. No fortune will be spent, but those shifters have to go....

I bought the Brooks for another bike and hated it so I took it off. I love it on this one. Dunno why.

Why is Austin Dave posting pix from the south side of Chicago?

    Oh, and cool bike!

Thanks sgletrak, Austin Dave left Austin in 2011 to attend to some family matters (failing inlaws) here on the Souf Side. I miss Austin some--and real bike trails that are handy--but Chicago has been great, too. I love this town, but is it FLAT here.

I have a much longer version of this OP that went into all that, but decided a shorter version would be better.
