    modern bike for beater/foul weather?

anyone get a newer dedicated crappy weather/beater bike? I have a lot of older mtbs but mostly steel. I was out in the crappy weather on one of my more beat up bikes yesterday and couldnt help but feel bad. Mud grinding down my rims, the stanchions on my manitou 3, moisture getting up in the frame and rusting it. I plan on doing a bit of winter riding and was thinking that the salt on the roads leading up to thr trails etc may be something to avoid. I dont mean to sound like a sissy but i really was thinking of grabbing a crappy aluminum nashbar frame with some disc mounts and building a mud and snow rig. Anyone do similar? Or should i not worry and ride my old bikes? Just trying to prevent wear on something that is of sentimental value and isnt made any more
