    Kona Cinder Cone 98

Kona Cinder Cone 98-photo.jpgKona Cinder Cone 98-img_0837.jpg

I've had my old Cinder Cone stashed in a friend's garage for the best part of 10 years, only ridden it off-road recently for the first time since about 2001 maybe. Last year I got some old Z1 Bomber's for 30 so I installed them and had the time of my life tearing down a mountain in Wales. So much so it's inspired me to sort the bike out properly and get it back to its best.

The issues I need to address are:

    bottom jockey wheel missing
granny ring and bolts are missing
    rear cassette is heavily worn
    chain - ditto
    all cables need replacing
new tyres (retro gum walls - suggestions please)
    fork seals replacing

I've sorted the missing jockey wheels (fell off the back of the car coming back from wales), got a pair from my LBS.

The rest will be sorted in the order above. I'm hoping to call on the forum's collective wisdom to fill in the gaps (yawning chasms) that have developed in my maintenance/componentry knowledge over the past 15 years.

First up is the granny ring and bolts. I've sourced the chainring I need:

    STRONGLIGHT 58 BCD Steel 20-24T :: 11.00 :: PARTS & ACCESSORIES :: Components - Gears - Chainrings - Stronglight :: Spa Cycles, Harrogate - The touring cyclists specialist.

Just needs some bolts now. Are all inner ring bolts made equal or am I looking at a long and arduous search of the entire internet to get a set that will fit the 5 bolt STX-RC crankset I've got? They're the model where the inner ring bolts on to the middle ring.

Was hoping these bolts would work:

RaceFace Inner Ring Bolts | Buy Online | ChainReactionCycles.com

If I'm mistaken I'd love to hear about it before I buy them!

    Cheers

Nice. I'm rebuilding a 96 Kona Koa, same frame, different name. Yours appears to be a 98, based on decals and cable routing.
Sorry I cant help with the rest.

YES! That's lovely. Gumwalls are exactly what I'm looking for, shame they're discontinued!

Wish my paintwork was in as good as condition as yours too, very tidy bike.

Ritchey Z max not original was all black side walled Kona tyres ( rare colour then ) but the gum walls were from new and still have some of the spikes on them.

Does anyone have any ideas for 2.1 width gum wall tyres currently available (in the UK)? I was thinking about these Charge Splashbacks:

Wiggle | Charge Splashback Folding MTB Tyre | MTB Off-Road Tyres

Googling gum wall tyres throws up a hell of a lot of non-gum wall tyres!

I just let one of those go in December when we went to Mexico. Damn flexy, but fun for sure. I really liked the STX RC 8spd stuff, it was finished well and worked decently too.
Good friction shifting is getting hard to find nowadays....
