Grab On MTN-1 grips (original formula)

At the request of Pinguin, I have been talking to Grab On about their MTN-1 grips. These were some of the earliest grips and are still being offered today. The problem with the new ones is in the foam density: the current grips are an 18-24 pound density foam while the original grips used 46 pound foam. So the current grips are only about 1/2 the density of the originals so they have a totally different feel and wear out faster. The current grips are available most places for about $10 a pair. According to Grab On, the better foam doubles the materials cost so the original formula grips would be $15 a pair. I figured it would be a good idea to see if their is much interest out there before ordering 10 pairs of these things.

    Let me know.

I just got an NOS set of the MTN-2's (with reqisite dried-up Lube-n-Glue pack) and I find the difference is only minor, but I do think the extra $5 would be worth it.

I don't feel a big difference on the density.
But the quality and the shape are completely different. The original is much rougher and slightly thicker than the new one.
Nonetheless I purchased 5 pair (like on Blackburn Mountain cages).
I would appreciate to spend 15$ on an authentic ones.

I'd kind of like the 2's instead of the 1's. I still have 1 set that I am afraid to use because I feel like I should hold out for that special build.

There is a major difference between the original density and what they are making now, night and day. I bought a pair a while ago and didn't like the low density foam. A couple of years ago, they came out briefly with the original density. I bought one and it was just like the original. I didn't see a need to stock up, but "briefly" was the operative word.

I've been talking to Grabon over the last two years now and then about the original formula and finally Charley at Grabon said, "Yeah, I think we can do a special run." I replied, "I think I know someone who can help make this happen" and called Jeff. Hopefully, hopefully

Now, if we all start calling Specialized about that re-release of Ground Controls....

Seems like there might be enough interest plus we can just sell them as regular grips in the shop. Sounds like it is 2-3 week lead time so hopefully we'll have something in a month or so.

Put me down for at least a couple of pairs too. I have an original set on my "unknown" bike and love the way they feel. I think they'd be perfect for my single speed, not to mention any future VRC builds.

Jeff did you mean 100 pair? sounds like 10 would be a small amount to do a special run.

Put me down for two. Did grab-on ever offer colors? For some reason I'm picturing a blue, but it could just be a faulty memory.

I remember colors for some other grips, but don't recall seeing mtn-1's in colors. Currently their line is only in black.

On their web site, they have pictures of grips in colors. Maybe if the black ones sell well, we'll look into colors?

But if they were colored they wouldn't be original eh? But perhaps popular with the Kleinerds out there however cause we all know that anything goes on a Klein.

I always preferred the 2's and still get them from Ritchey, not quite the same compound as original but close enough and I am used to them now anyway.

I remembered what I was I was thinking. I had blue ones on my three wheelers back in the mid 80s. Blue ones would look cool though on one of my bikes although obviously not original.

No glue either. We keep a big ole can of 3M spray contact adhesive around for all the grips.

yeah, I just thought it would be cool to see those glue packets again. But certainly not necessary.

Only about 20 of the Timbuk II tires left from this batch. We did order another batch that should arrive in March/April but they will probably be $5 more per tire.
