Geometry Q: More Agile Front End?

Out of all the bikes I've ever ridden my 1996 Fisher Mt Tam had the best geometry for singletrack. The front end was very easy to pick up and move around logs and such.
The length, size, and standover height of my Merlin are very similar to the Mt Tam, the ride is comfortable for me but has a different "feel" when trying to move around stuff and climbing.

Question: Is it possible to make any improvements (other than frame replacement which I don't want to do) in order to make the front of my bike more agile? Longer stem? Shorter stem? Riser bar? Custom fork with different rake?

I recently added a Moots Layback post and it helped a bit.
