Good job! First RS mountain bike in 1983?

I was really into BMX back when I was a kid, and poured over bike-related magazines. As I got older and too big for the 20-inch BMX frames, I got into mountain bikes.

As I got more into them and began reading of the history, a BMX article I vaguely remembered popped into my head: some guy, somewhere, kit-bashed a cool bike with disc brakes and a rear suspension. And raced it down mountains!

Today I finally found that article. A guy had scanned back issues of BMX Action and posted them online.

    Old school BMX Action Magazine

The pics here are from the July 1983 issue, pages 40-43. Enjoy!

Hehehe, Brian Skinner is more than just "some guy", the man's in the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame.

Thanks for sharing the article, that's some awesome stuff right there!

Oops, I made a typo in the subject line...it should have read RS, not FS.
    Sorry, folks.
I remembered parts of the article, but didn't know the name of the magazine, the year, or the guy's name. Hence, it took me some time to find the answer.
I was only a kid at the time.

Just put me on a bike and I became a 43 year old kid.

The other thing cool is when he says hitting ruts on a fireroad "is all jittery on a hardtail". I realise that term comes from motorbikes but I wonder if that was the first time the term hardtail was used in reference to bicycles?

    Oakley 3 grips FTW!
