First ride ... (Well not really now...)

This morning I decided to finish it up with parts on hand as the weather was supposed to be beautiful and i really wanted to try it out. Still a few changes to be made to restore it to as MBA-tested condition. The rear hub (currently a REALLY LOUD Hugi ) and rim, front rim, brake pads, bar off the top of my head. The really beat up parts are from the original MBA test and race at Big Bear as well as whatever other races they may have done since - so they will stay. My personal preference is to find a 0 rise T-Bone and replace the 10 degree rise stem.

    Here are some Droid-phone shots:

I have to tell you guys ... these bikes ride like no others. Really quite unique and exceptional. No I can't explain it - to paraphrase a famous statement "I can't define it but you'll know it when you ride it"

    I'm still smiling afterwards ...

I love all your posts! Can't wait to ride with you....next spring. :P

p.s. I was thinking a Hugi hubbed Tioga disk would be just about as mind blowing a rear wheel as there was ever made.

The pleasure will be entirely mine

This is the wheel that was packed for Keyesville this year

I was thinking of running a mic from my video cam to the seatstay just to try to capture the roar.

Next year for sure. Just hafta make sure I don't blow up this disc before then!

    Stay well my friend G!

Nice, are the bar ends a personal preference or trying to keep it period correct?

Not what Tomac used but how the MBA bike was built.

Actually he did use them on and off but more commonly used Control Tech - usually Stix Lite but occasionally others.

    Looking good!

I was going to say that I liked the last shot, the big one, with the 2 bikes and if the one in the background was yours. Then I realised its 2 photos together. Some days I do vague really well...

The tension disc would ampllfy the hub nicely.

    Thanks!

Yeah it does look like that's a single photo - the visual effect is purely coincidence BUT you've given me a great idea.

I remember when the first Manitou shock was at the shop and how cool it was to ride a bike with a suspension fork. You could literally go full tilt into a curb and the shock would take the majority of the hit.
The tension discs were kinda cool too back then, but in the back of my head, I always wondered if it was difficult to ride in a cross-wind and for that reason I never pursued them. I do remember that they amplified sound and you could 'drum' on them to annoy people in the shop...

And I wish someone had volunteered to ride one of those two so that I didn't have to walk them both down the trail ...

Can't tell yet - first time I've ever ridden a Manitou or ANY elastomer fork. I have to say I was both surprised and impressed with its shock absorption. Would never have believed it but on first blush I like it a lot!

I remember Tomac at mt snow, with the disc wheel. In the singletrack, you could hear him long before you could see him.

    Nice bike! The Aprilia too!

    Those discs are still awesome.

Thanks - rode the Raleigh yesterday and Aprilia today. Both are heard before they are seen and both are scary fast
