    Another rustbucket recycle

I found another late 30's Elgin. I was pretty happy with the last one although there are some things I wish I had done differently or better. I already have a Tange tx-1200 that is in good shape but rusty. I also have a nice set of Shimano disk wheels so I am planning to braze on a disk brake adaptor on both the frame and the fork. I have been commuting 5 days a week so I want to make this into a cool retro commuter, rigid with slick tires.

    Plans are:
Mod the frame and fork for disk brakes.
Modern 9 speed, XT crank, shifters, derailleurs.
    Internal cable routing
    Mr. Tick V-Bars
    Brooks B-72 or similar saddle.

The frame had some minor cosmetic damage that I have already repaired as you can see in the photos. I think with a nice flat black powder coat on everything it should be pretty low key.

And I have a new helper.

Looking forward to another one of your conversions. Good to have a little one around the workshop to pick up the things you drop.

Craigslist, recycling center, and this last one came from Ebay. I got this one off Ebay very cheap. It came with a skip tooth chain that I soaked in white vinegar overnight and it looks like new now. After I sell the chain I will have gotten this frame for free. They are not super rare and most people are after Schwinns so they fly under the radar. The bottom bracket is only about 1/4 inch lower than my Schwinn DX but the top tube is a bit longer. I like the drop stand tabs in the rear because I can just hammer the right one flat, drill a hole and thread it to make a derailleur hanger, you can't do that on a Schwinn, you have to use a bolt on hanger or braze one on. I don't think I paid more than $75 for any of them.
