Another 'is mine a Zaskar' thread...

Another 'is mine a Zaskar' thread...-image.jpgAnother 'is mine a Zaskar' thread...-image.jpgAnother 'is mine a Zaskar' thread...-image.jpgHello there, sorry for asking the same old question...

Bought this 10 years ago off of eBay as a general fixer-upper but it just sat in the shed.

Moved house and my neighbour has a bit of a thing for old GTs so I dug it out.

Now thinking it might be an early Zaskar. 93/94 with U-brakes.

    Any thoughts out there?

    Cheers

    Will

FSA...only s they look a bit like a pair I have sitting around...

Look for a serial number on the dropouts and whether it has 6061 or 7005 stamped on it anywhere...

Apart from a black ID sticker and the GT Logo on the end of the top tube can't find any markings.

P.s. saw this pic on another forum and think the frame is a match. But obviously can't be sure it's a zaskar either...Another 'is mine a Zaskar' thread...-image.jpg

if its a zaskar it should have 6061 stamped on the dropout and the serial number on the other one (i believe) if the serial number is on the bottom bracket, then not a zaskar... the flat end cap on the top tube tells it wither a zaskar or a pantera (possibly something else)...either way a nice frame
I'm sure someone will be along to tell whats what.

Mmmmmm... No serial number anywhere. Sounds like the U-brakes mark it as early but an early what?

I'm not a GT expert, but ... The u-brake Zaskars I've seen didn't have replacable hangers. That ID sticker doesn't look like anything from GT. The serial number and frame size would typically be stamped on the outside of the non-drive dropout.

Cheers Muddybudd, odd one isn't it? It's got the GT engraved cap on the end if the top tube and the welds and design echoes older GTs I've seen. I don't know if there are fakes out there but it seems odd to go to the trouble of faking a frame piece for piece/weld for weld but ignore a simple frame number and material stamp...

Actually the replaceable hanger looks like a later addition i.e. a fix.

It looks like the rear der hanger was cut off and someone rigged a replaceable hanger on there.

Odd you can't find any numbers. It looks like the original rear is all there except for the new hanger.

Palamar probably? . Both my Zaskars 92 & 94 have the serial, size and 6061 stamped on the dropouts. What size is the seat post?

Cheers Fred, any chance you can attach a pic of an aluminium palomar/palamar with ubrakes that matches the frame? A very lazy look on google images shows a lot of steel that looks quite different. Would be great to close this off.

I'vre heard of a few xizangs without serial numbers, but not zaskars...or other GT's...so its possible... or could be anything (GT wise), but there are only a few bikes that have the flat cap with or without the ubrake... could be pre production...could be anything...

I have a 91 Zaskar frame. It does not have a 6061 stamp. My 97 Zaskar frame did though.

This 91 has the serial number on the inner dropout on the non-drive side that's kind of high up on the dropout. It has U-Brake mounts and the type of cable guide in the triangle below the seat clamp area, as shown in the second photo.

Mine is a Zaskar as I am the original owner and bought it as a GT Tech-Shop set in 1991.

    Hope these help you.

P.S. If you don't want to remove the sticker, run your finger over the ID sticker and see if you can you feel any numbers stamped into the metal, underneath the sticker.

I'd be worried about that rear derailleur hanger. Suggest a build up just to see if it will shift properly before you start dumping money into it.

Love me some Zaskars but this one seems to have had a strange journey. Thinking it might have been modded into a fixie by some garage tinkerer. I don't think the strange ID sticker adds value (ID'd via RB) but without knowing more I wouldn't remove it. It does seem it may have been placed over the stamped ID but you should be able to feel that (I don't see signs of a stamped serial number under the sticker via photo - but it might be there).

My unofficial take on it... It is most likely a Zaskar. Left the factory, possibly out the side door on the employee discount program, without a number. At some point an ID# was needed, sticker was stuck. Derailleur hanger was broken (as sometimes happened with aluminum frames w/o replacable hangers) and repair was made. There was a Zaskar on ebay last week with the exact same repair.

Cheers dudes, fingering the sticker it doesn't like there is anything underneath. Very much appreciated advice from all. Damn worth posting here. Will try and test the drive train before spending much cash!

Wrong size seatpost for the Zaskars with non-replaceable derailleur hangers. Should be a 26.8 if that were true.

I know chap, and apparently a pantera should have a 27.2? And it should have serial numbers and the metal designation... Nothing adds up with this frame.
