    Acera X 7x shifter needed!

Hope someone can point me in the direction of a supplier. Sheared the internals on my rear shifter and my Google search didn't net any results. Model # is ST-M290 and is the combined brake and shifter unit but I only require the shifter. This is going on a '94 Giant Yukon.

    TIA,
    Tom

Prolly gonna have to find a donor bike. Or upgrade. 7 speed stuff is getting hard to find, and commands a good price. For example, a 7 speed LX set (M564) will set you back about 40 on E-bay.

Another option would be Grip Shift plus some new brake levers.

Thanks old skool, resigning myself to the fact it might be difficult finding the needed parts for a repair. To upgrade I guess I'll need the separate shifter, brake lever, rd, and cassette. What am I getting myself into with this? I'm handy with a wrench so I want to do this myself. Is the width of the 7 speed cassette the same as an 8 speed? Comments and suggestions welcome! Thanks!

Just head down to your friendly local bike shop and tell them you need a shifter/brake lever combo for 7 speed and whatever type of brakes you have.
I sell these all time at the shop for around $35 a pair or half that for just one side.
It will be under the Shimano Acera/Altus group.

the spacing between the cogs is the same with the 7 and 8 speed systems. So, any seven or eight speed shifter should work for you.
Need: McMahon brake for roller cam mounts, Mountain Goat fork.

Not true , 7 speed spacing is 5.0, 8 speed spacing is 4.8, 7 speed cable pull is 2.9 , 8 speed cable pull is 2.8. Rear Shifting Close enough that it works , but not perfect.

Thanks everyone. Looks like I can use an Acera ST-EF51 integrated shifter as a suitable substitute. About $45 including shipping.

    Cheers!
