    '93 Marin Bear Valley restoration

Ok, I know it's not a desirable bike or anything special in the VRC world but it's extremely sentimental to me...

...and I'd like to restore it with higher end, period correct parts. The more accessible the better! I'm not looking for the holy grail of stems, cranksets etc, just something better than the exage gruppo it came with. In fact, I'd like to replace pretty much everything except frame/forks! If you have any suggestions (other than binning the bike!), I'm all ears. Thanks in advance

Best and easiest thing you can do that won't break the bank and actually work brilliantly (IMHO)....full M900 XTR build. First generation Shimano XTR build from front to back. Their cantilever brakes are some of the best out there, hubs will last forever, cranks are bullet proof. From there, you can bling out the stem/post/bars/saddle as needed.

Thanks mate! After a little research, I had come to a similar conclusion... Until I found this Shimano XTR M900 M910 8spd Complete Mountain Bike Group Holy RARE | eBay.

    Although, I could save $1100!!!

    Those guys are chumps.

Your best bet is to find a donor bike. I found a full M900 bike at a bike swap for $100. Bikes like that can be had for $250-500 easy and hopefully some cool period 'upgrades' if you're lucky.
