GoPro HD: firmware upgrade gone bad...

hi there and greetings from austria! 8-)

I just made a big mistake and installed the "inofficial" (or whatsoever) UP/UPd-enabling firmware found on some french site - and now my cam doesn't start up anymore. just the red light is on when I charge the battery...as soon as I disconnect the cam or press the startup-button, the red light turns off.
is there anything I can do myself to bring it back to life? like downgrading to the original firmware? I really do not want to have to send it in, since I'm on vacation and need the camera...

I hope you can help me out, any held would be really appreciated!

    thanks in advance!

    Hi Ramin,

Ok, it looks like you do have the HD HERO camera and have somehow obtained an unauthorized firmware update and uploading instructions for the HD HERO camera. The firmware update that you loaded onto your camera is still a trial version that is being tested, and therefore unauthorized for release as it could have some bugs in it. As we do not yet have this firmware update available for release through our website, could you please let us know where you were able to get a copy of this firmware? Any of our testers who had access to this firmware should not be passing this firmware on to any other customers.

We've attached the standard firmware of the HD HERO camera to this email. Once uploaded, you will have the same firmware that was on the camera from the factory.

When you get the chance, please do let us know where you were able to download the beta version of the firmware update.

    Many thanks,

Hi & many thanks for your attention,
Well, I have some new photos of my camera with the serial number, the back side, the UP & UPd mention in the LCD… I hope it will help you to identify my camera and resolve my problem.
    Best regards

    Hi Ramin,

It is not possible for a main.elf file to be uploaded to the HD HERO camera, as the firmware for the HD camera is a different type of file. The HD HERO camera can not recognize a main.elf file for uploading.

The instructions for having the HD HERO camera update the firmware are also completely different from doing a firmware update with the standard def HERO cameras. Doing the button sequence of the standard def firmware update will have no effect on initiating a firmware update with the HD HERO camera. You will just end up powering on the camera.

If you have the UP/UPd settings on your camera, you most likely do not have the HD HERO camera. Before we go ahead and provide you with any old/new firmware, we need to be sure of what camera you have. Can you please email us a picture of your camera, and also email us the serial number of your camera which is located in the battery compartment. This will help us identify your camera.

    Many thanks,

    Hi,
    I don’t think so !!!
Say me why I have in the setup menu of my camera the up/down option?...
Is it so difficult to give me a link to download the actual firmware?
It’s certainly fester than replaying X times my original email … ;-)
    Regards

    Hi Ramin,

The HD HERO camera can not recognize the firmware file for the standard def cameras, so it is impossible for the camera to upload this firmware. Your camera will still have the correct original HD firmware installed. There is no need to reinstall the HD firmware.

    Hello,

Thanks for your interest in GoPro.

We are currently developing a number of different features such as the UP and UPd settings that we will be releasing as soon as possible in a firmware upgrade. You will be able to download the firmware upgrade from our website at no charge once released. To be notified when the updates are released please sign up for our newsletter at: http://www.goprocamera.com/newsletter/

In the meantime, if needing to record upside down, some video players and most editing programs such as quicktime pro will allow you to rotate the image. You can do a search in the help section of your particular program for 'rotate image', and you should get further instructions on how to do so.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Interesting that www.gopro.com web site states that firmware upgrades for the HD camera "are coming soon", so I wonder why the French dealer even has one on their site.

Thanks joe i will do!, Have fun with yours aswell!

Thanks, so far i've only used it around the house the only thing i can say gopro could try and improve a bit more on low light quality is not bad but not great inside if you get what i mean!

But i don't cycle on trails much in the dark.. so i say the hd go pro is epic!!!

Anyone know if the handlebar/seatpost mount is strong, I've heard stories of people saying they're not that great so im not shure weather to get one.

    Are they sturdy?

    Yours sincerely
    Wayne
