Seen any wildlife on the trail?

Yesterday I saw a coyote on the Mad River Valley trails. It came over the ridge just 20' away, looked right at me, and disappeared again.

I came right up on a beautiful bull moose one morning, almost hit a turkey another day and startled a few deer at Franklin Falls : )

Perry Hill - I've come across a Fisher Cat (it looked like it was sizing me up for lunch...) and almost had a collision with a Moose.

I see at least one, if not more, deer a ride, but that's because I'm riding in Orono. I'll see the occasional fox every so often as well.

Well, if deer flies and black flies count as wildlife, I've seen plenty this summer Saw a garter snake at Stowe Town Loops yesterday.

    Roughly in order of size...

Moose, black bears (mother with cubs included), deer, turkey, fox, owl, goshawk (up close and personal in attack mode), fisher cat, mink, and more here in Central VT.

    Wildlife Encounter

Riding last night blew out a sidewall close to home and decided to walk out. After a while I came across two baby porcupines in the middle of the trail just rooting around and very unconcerned about my presence. I detoured off the trail and let them be.

I live about a mile ride from the University trails, so I typically ride those. Every so often I'll ride behind Orono highschool, or the Old Town trails behind LeBrees bakery to change things up. There are some nice trails across Stillwater ave that I get to via the University Forest entrance across the street from Hannafords in Old Town. Another good option in the area is riding the bog in Bangor. That place never seems to disappoint. I can't comment on Veazie or Milford trails as I've never ventured out that way.

Saw a deer, porcupine and a couple of snakes at Fomba.

A deer at Franklin Falls just this past weekend who just stood there starting at us at a close distance, 25ft maybe.

Saw a huge bird at Bear Brook one time. Not certain what it was, maybe a falcon, hawk? And a porcupine as well.

Numerous deer at Mines Falls back in the day, and some deer recently at Fomba (was even on Deer Run ironically).

Saw a coyote on the powerlines in Pelham this year. It was huge. Several people have told me the coyotes here are actually half wolf and half coyote.

And almost smacked into an owl at Yudicky a few weeks ago. Came around a corner and spooked it out of a tree. It flew down the trail for about 20yds and I was right behind it. Pretty neat.

Also saw a pretty big snapping turtle at Yudicky. Shell about the size of a basket ball.

Almost every ride I see a group of turkeys that have taken up residence at the trail head. Saw a hawk flying low in the branches last week.
