Old logging roads
As a youth I spent a bunch of time tooling around the logging roads in Northern Maine. Since then I have been on many in my pursuit of paddling. I have not however gone biking around on them as I am new to mountain biking. I have always thought they would be cool to tool around on.
Anyone have much experience with this?

I've put some miles on some of those roads. ItchyJesus on here has put many more than I have, too. They're fun if you have a sense of adventure and can appreciate the work that was done to create them, and even moreso, the fact that they haven't been developed yet. I don't think I'd have much fun riding my mountain bike on them without some singletrack to break it up, but they're a good time cruising at 20mph on my cyclocross bike for hours on end. Here's a shot from back home.

Here in Southern Maine where I live now I've found quite a bit of old ATV trails, and the rails-to-trails projects are pretty sweet too.

What is the name of that road that goes from Milford to Canada? I forget.
I am immune to your disdain.

Studmill Road. I can hope on it just a short mile up the road from my folks place.

As a UMaine Alumni i have logged some miles on the Studmill road but in my 4x4 not on 2 wheels. I don't know if i'd enjoy cruising out Studmill on my mach 5.

Thinking more of old low use/abandoned than main roads.

I do a considerable amount of riding on old logging roads were I live, but have also done a couple really interesting bike trips farther north in maine. One of the best was a hike, but mostly bike up Mt Redington. It an be reach by a multitude of old disused roads which are reached by the carabasett valley rd. Not a long ride, but a good deal of elevation gain and really interesting I thought.

I know that area a bit, but more from thwacking around in winter. This is more in line with what I was thinking about.

I want to do a 1-2 nighter up in Pittsburg, NH this summer on their logging roads and trails. I'll be doing it on a Salsa Fargo not a straight up mtn bike. I've been looking for some information on the stuff up there. The best I have found so far is the city's website or chamber of commerce (I forget right now).
