    Moose Brook Fat Bike Race

Just up on bike-reg. Fatbikes only, capped at 50 racers.

Moose Brook Fat Bike Race!! We have been loving fatbikes up here in the north, and decided that it was time for a proper winter cross country race. Where better for a winter race in the Northeast than in the heart of the White Mountains. Coos Cycling Club works hard to build the trails at Moose Brook and beyond, which I think you'll find evident. We also throw a pretty good shin-dig. The money that you cough up (thank you) will be rolled right back into the trail system, and will help this race happen again year after year.

The race course will be completely contained within the park, utilizing the same winding singletrack that we ride all summer. There will be a bit of climbing on the snowmachine trail as well to help spread the field, and get some passing done. It is a 4 mile course, with a 2 lap (8 mile) and 4 lap (16 mile) option for racers. We will be updating our facebook page with conditions, and you will receive another email prior to raceday with a conditions update and some final details on the course.

The Start/Finish line will be at a great old pavilion with a fireplace, and we'll have a couple of other barrels burning as well for spectators. We will have a grill going with some dogs and there will be a spread of other munchables, but I wouldn't go so far as to say that we are serving a meal. There will be hot water, cocoa, coffee and the sort.

Oh, and obviously the award ceremony! Custom made trophies for 1st 2nd and 3rd for both Mens and Womens class.

    Okay, the details:
Event is at Moose Brook State Park: 30 Jimtown Rd Gorham, NH 03581
Day of: Sunday January 26 2014
8am: Packet pickup and day of registration open
9:30am: Mandatory Race Meeting at the Start Finish Line
10am: Mass Start (possibly 2 waves depending on #s)
The rest of the times are up to you.

Sounds fun, I signed up, been meaning to get over and try those trails. Is it fatbikes only, or can the unFat ride at their own risk?

No idea, but yes. Just started spreading the word, posters aren't even out yet. I think we will reach our cap of 50 racers pretty easily.

Thanks y'all. Registration is closed. Hit our cap of 50 racers in 10 days. Now we just need snow.

Unlike most winter events you don't even actually need snow. See you all there.

I'm not ready to start thinking like that just yet, we'll have snow, And plenty of it. But it's true, this would be a most awesome race course any time of the year. Nothing to worry about.

Next time you need to open this to more racers. I'd love to come check it out but I discovered it a little too late.

Great to hear about the race. Would like to head over to see it. Will the trails be open to riding after the race. Like to bring the Moonlander and perhaps spend the weekend in town. Other places to ride in the area?

It's a State Park so the trails should be available before and after the race. There are thousands of miles of snowmobile trails as well as a lot of heavily used hiking trails so the winter riding options are almost endless.

Ben will have to chime in on current conditions but the snow in Conway is dry right now. After the thaw there should be all sorts of opportunities.

    Moose Brook Fat Bike Race

Thanks Rob. We did pack out the racecourse. But it was still pretty fluffy . Won't be after this, though. Firm conditions abound. There has been lots of interest in the race since registration has closed, and I'm sorry y'all didn't get in. We would love to have you come up to watch the race and ride around. There are plenty of trails at the park and in and around Gorham/Berlin to ride. Berlin has some extremely fun singlepass snomo trails.

I will be there, barring a blizzard that makes the drive un-fun. I feel a little bad, having signed up early and not being a racer type, but will do my best to keep the Fun in Fatbiking! Looking forward to trying those trails -Barb

I did not sign up to race but am planning to be there to cheer folks on and ride afterward. Conditions permitting, of course.

Should be a really fun event.

Barb, I'm psyched to have you come help keep it mellow. Rob, the conditions will permit. I plan on leading the "sweep lap" after the last racer has stared their last lap. The more the merrier.

It seems like this thread needs a bump 2 days before the race! How's the snowpack holding up there? Any Ice wearing through? I see that the HIGH temp is forecast to be 2F and the race time temp is -5F so that's not really ideal.

A bit of ice, sure, but mostly snow. And it's gonna snow tomorrow. Temperature? Better 0 than 35. Can't wait to see everyone.
