A few of us headed to Kingdom Trails in Vermont on Thursday July 31st. Long drive up but it goes by quick when you’re anticipating the ride and catching up on reading DirtRag, Bike, Adventure Cycling, and Mountain Bike Action. Of course we discussed the merits of just about every type bike, fork, shock, tire, handlebar, etc...You get the idea.

Day 1. Arrived in St. Johnsbuy around 2:30pm. Some of us stayed at hotel(Comfort Inn- a very nice place to say…clean, comfortable, breakfast included, friendly staff) and a few of the crew stayed at the campground(Moose River-quietest campground I have ever been to in my life!).

After buying seasons passes, admiring the bike part art, and talking with the Kingdom Trail gal we were ready to ride. We started out from East Burke Sports lot about 4pm. Rode Pump Track, East Darling Hill , VAST, Culvert Cut , Old Webs, Border, Webs, Violets Outback, Darling Hill, Bill Magill, Heavens Bench(it started to rain at the top), Ridge, VAST, Bill Magill, Sugarhouse Run(the skies opened up big time at this point), Worth It, Sugarhouse run, and finished out on Kitchel(monsoon rains at this point).

Riding was interesting……a number of falls happened due to slick mud on the side hill on Worth It. 3 of the crew were first timers to KT but all were expressing amazement at the trail network. 2 of the riders were SS’ers and the trails were perfect for them. I Took a quick vid of the East Branch Passumpic River to give perspective on the rainfall. Directly from riding we headed to Hoagies for a great meal. Friendly service and nice vibe in the dining room… See pictures of the Hoagies Girls.
Day 2: We decided to give the trails a break and planned other activities. Headed to Mt. Pisgah for a hike up to the top( great views from the top of Lake Willouby, Burke Mtn., and Newark Pond). Met a family and friends who own Vinnie’s restaurant in Lyndonville, great conversation with that crew. Swam at Lake Willouby, unfortunately no mermaids were seen on the rocks. Headed for Newport VT and the Louis Garneau Factory Outlet....nice deals to be had...great place. Hit Village Sports in Lyndonville to check out the shop. Next checked out a few houses for sale with Jeanna, things are still very expensive from our perspective but some nice stuff for sale. Hit Trout River Brewery for a few select micro brews(tried the Oatmeal Stout, Oatmeal Stout w/Nitrous, IPA, Barley wine, Trout River Red, and a few others, all were excellent(they would not fill our growlers though!). Ran into some very nice people from Big Ring Racing of Ottawa. Then we headed back to Hoagies for another meal! (we met a bike patroller for KT at Hoagies, he gave us some good tips on riding the area, nice guy) We finished out the night at the edge of the Moose River around the campfire.
Day 3: Started riding at 9am from East Burke Sports lot. Rode: East Darling Hill Rd., Darling Hill Rd., Harp, Coronary by Pass, BOG, Pasture Point Loop, Pasture Point, Coronary, Loop(met fellow mtbr'er RAPIDTRAX riding his sweet Intense), Bemis(massive mud pit!), Tap n Die(lots of logging happened here), Webs, River Run(there was a real river there!), Violets Outback, HogBack, Violets Outback, we connected with the Big Ring Racing Crew at this point and talked and rode together on OW, Old Webs(twice) , HogBack, Sidewinder, West Branch(really like this climb, well designed trail), Violets outback, Darling Hill Rd., Bill Magill, Heavens Bench, Ridge, VAST, Bill Magill, Sugarhouse Run, Herbs, and finished up with the Pump Track.
Nice riding for sure except mtbr'er SLOW DAVE took a nasty fall on Webs when he was "in a trance" and wiped out on a corner....badly sprained his hand....ouch and could not shift his bike due to having twist grip shifters! Hung out at the trail head talking with people and having some food and beer. Later headed to Lake Willouby for a swim (still no mermaid sightings, I must have swam for 1600 meters to look for them but no luck!)..........went to Miss Lyndon Diner for dinner....great food and we met one of Angela's Angels........she and 2 others work there and are really into riding sport bikes. Finished out the night on the Moose River enjoying a campfire.

Day 4. Got started early (7:30am) with a ride off of Darling Hill Road....did Old Webs twice, Hogback, Sidewinder, West Branch, Violets Outback, Darling Hill, Bill Magill, Heavens Bench, and back down Darling Hill Road.....Packed up and checked out Kingdom Sports in St. Johnsbury (pretty interesting shop, Lew is good guy to talk action sports with and has some interesting history). One last stop at the Passumpic River Hydro dam....very cool with all that water flowing.
We plan to head back up to Kingdom Trails at the end of August, got to use those seasons’ passes!
