It's great to see what my intended build will look like, as my custom numbers are pretty much identical to yours!

Makes my current new bike decision easier/harder! Harder because now I have to start saving!

Lovely looking bike, well done to you and Sherwood!

    El Toro Update

Here she is fully rigid with the new Ventana front @ 440mm. Weighs in at just over 20lbs on the bathroom scale. Climbs like an ape raped by a scalded mountain goat.

    Smile Salty 4" Specs/weight

    New ride Salty 4"

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have just completed my new Salty 20" with quad bearings and 4" rocker.

    Build Kit:

XT brake levers and rotors I wanted to stay with rapid fire shifters XTR
    All other drivetrain XTR
    Crossmax SL wheels
    Salsa skewers
    Talas fork RLC
    RP3 med Propedal
    Thompson post and stem
    Oval carbon bars
    Shimano 575 pedals
    Roll X Pro tyres
    Laser Ti saddle

    Weight 27.8lbs exactly

I have now completed three rides with this set up. I test rode many top end bikes before deciding on the Salty. I am very demanding and are very happy with the ride. It is balanced, plush with the right geometry for good climbing and sweet downhill performance. Suspension is very active and feels as good if not better than my old 5" bike. The TALAS (06) works well. I find the wind down feature works great when climbing and the wind out good for technical decents. Frame feels very stable but responsive. Rides better for me than BLUR LT, BLUR Classic, Yeti 575 and Motolite I test rode (plus not common on trail or heavily marketed). My favourite characteristics of this bike are very active suspension that is small bump compliant and just works plus rigidity of the rear end! Very pleased with this bike. I set out to build a bike where price was not going to be an issue and wanted the best. I feel I've got it for my riding style in New Zealand!

I've made a few changes to my X5 over the past year and it's put on a little weight in the process. Now up from 31.6 to 33.0 lbs. Starting to notice the weight a little on steep climbs (or is that just me!), but it feels great everywhere else. Changes are:-

Swinger 3-way air replaced with Romic TT Coil to give full 6" rear travel
Thompson seatpost replaced with 3" Gravity Dropper
XT triple chainrings replaced with RF double and bashguard (also shortened chain & switched to short cage mech)
X9 triggers replaced with X9 gripshift
Michelin Hot S 2.2 replaced with Michelin AM 2.2 tubeless

    Full build:-
    Frame: '04 X5 19"
    Color: Cosmic Orange
    Options: 6" Rockers, quad bearings
Shock: Romic Twin Tube, 450 lb/in spring
    Fork: Rockshox '05 Pike Race
    Wheelset: Mavic Crossmax XL Disc
    Skewers: Mavic
    Seatpost Clamp: Stock
    Front Der: XT
    Rear Der: SRAM X9
    Shifters: SRAM X9 gripshift
    Chain: SRAM PC-991
    Cassette: Shimano XT 12/32
Brakes: Hope Mono mini 180 mm front, 160 mm rear
    Cranks/BB: XT M760 Hollowtech II
    Pedals: Crankbrothers Mallet M
    Headset: Blackspire
    Handlebar: Easton EA70 mid-rise
    Seat Post: Gravity Dropper 3"
    Stem: 90 x 15 Thomson Elite Black
    Saddle: WTB Pure V Race
    Grips: ODI Lock-on Ruffian
Front Tire: Michelin AM 2.2 tubeless
Rear Tire: Michelin AM 2.2 tubeless

Finally got a chance to post my set up

    Frame: 2004 X-5 (21”)
    Color: Semi-Polished
    Options: 5” Rockers, quad bearings
Shock: Pushed Float AVA & Romic Coil
Fork: 2004 Fox Float RLC w/Talas
Wheelset: Chris King ISO w/Mavic 717
    Skewer: Salsa
    Seatpost Clamp: Hope
    Front Der: XT
    Rear Der: XT
    Shifters: XTR 9sp PODS
    Chain: SRAM
    Cassette: Shimano M760 11-32
    Brakes: Avid BB7 (7” front & 6” rear)
    Cranks/BB: Shimano XT
    Pedals: Shimano 959
    Headset: Chris King NoThreadset
Handlebar: Easton EA70 XC low rise
Seat Post: 27.2 Thomson Elite 410mm Black 7deg setback
    Stem: Thompson Elite 5x120
    Saddle: Selle Italia Flite Gel
    Grips: ODI Ruffian
    Front Tire: Panaracer Cinder 2.25
    Rear Tire: Panaracer Cinder 2.25
Accesories: Not sure but maybe a GD Seat Post

I haven't ridden the bike with the Pushed Float AVA but just bouncing around the driveway I can tell it blows through the travel to fast for my liking. My set point is 33% sag with 175 psi and 6 clicks on rebound. The Romic is a work horse shock which I'm sure it will see lots of use in Auburn.

I built this from almost all new parts off of MTBR classifides and E-bay. Also some local shop help. The total build took 6 months and cost me under 2K. IT can be done, but it takes time I wanted a bike for my local group rides as my 6" salty could hang but was alot of work some days and just needed to get off my HT for my backs sake. So far she rocks for a xc bike under 2K.

    My First Ventana...

After what seems like an eternity of lurking/drooling, I finally have a Ventana! Having coveted these beautiful bikes for 10 years, I couldn't resist picking up this mint Marble Peak FS. I realize this is a blast from the past for many of the Ventanaphiles here, but the short travel is a perfect match for the XC riding I do. I've spec'd it as follows:

    Fork: '00 Marz Z2 BAM
    Shock: Fox Alps 5R
    Hubs: Rolf Disc
    Rims: Rolf Dolomite Disc
    Spokes: DT 14g.
    Tires: Bontrager Revolt
    Headset: King
    Stem: Thomson X-4
    Bar: FSA 190XC
    Grips: ODI lock-on
    Brakes: Avid BBDB 185mm
    Brakelines: Avid FMJ
    Post: Thomson
Saddle: Selle Italia Flyte Trans Am
    Cranks: RaceFace Turbine
    Pedals: Eggs
    Shifters: SRAM 9.0SL ESP
    R. Deraileur: SRAM 9.0SL ESP
    F. Deraileur: XTR
    Chain: PC970
    Cassette: XT
    Weight: 27.3 lbs

I've only taken her on a couple of rides, but so far it has lived up to my every expectation. It is my first, but certainly not my last, Ventana.

    Kenpark,
Good luck maintaining that Fox Alps5! I've got a similar shock on my FSR, which seems to not be supported by Fox any longer. I think there is an outfit that makes shocks for the older bikes, but I've forgotten their name...dane-bramage...

Rumpfy, how much does the bike weigh? The build looks great even dusty. Those tires are awefully beefy!

    Thanks MW.

It's right at about 28lbs. I haven't weighed it in a while though.

I tried to keep the parts a nice mix of light(ish) weight, but reliable.

I'm having a hell of a time figuring out a gearing set up that I like right now.

As for the tires...those are the first tires I've had in a long, long time that I like this much. I can't see using anything else out here in the Bay Area. We'll see come winter.

2.55 w/ 2.7 casing. They're tall tires. You can run them at pretty low pressure. The low tread keeps you rolling quick. They're quoted at 760g....which is pretty good for a tire that size.

    Yeah...and my picture kinda sucks.
