Fo - How do you like the feel of that AM1 on your X-5 as opposed to the TALAS? You'll see in a different thread that I'm considering going to a 2004 Z1 Drop Off 130mm ETA on my 2004 X-5, but I haven't had the best luck with Zoke forks. I love my TALAS, but I wonder if it's "enough" fork for the X-5.

Interesting cable routing. I tried the FD around the seat tube like that on my X5, but the rocker pinched it at full compression. It'd be slick if there was a cable stop on the right side, inline with the FD. Have to have a word with Sherwood on that. A How does the FD cable like running the long way around? I thought it would grabbed by the tire. Currently I'm crossing the FD and RD cable right in front of the seat tube. Seems to work.

    SVSocrates,

I'm pretty sure the Rocket shifters aren't compatable with the X-0 RD. You will need the X-9 triggers. The Rocket and Attack are 2:1 and compatable with Shimano RDs only. I HIGHLY recommend the X-0 RD. It shifts sooooo much better than my XTR 952.

I much prefer the feel of the Marzocchi to the Talas, especially at speed. The Talas simply never felt robust over the rough stuff. In my humble opinion, it is a much better fork and much better matched to the X-5, especially with 6" travel which I now have.

I did however enjoy the Talas while I had it but upon switching, did really feel an improvement in all regards, with the exception of on the fly travel with the Talas.

    Cheers

    05 El Salt

Here she is. After three weeks I've got her back together with the new marathon SL. Now if I can figure out how to get the negative pressure to reduce the travel to 100mm I'll be all set. I think I'll work on replacing to Shifters and rear derailler next (I'll try to keep it at 8 speed though or switch to SRAM triggers).

Interested to hear what you think about your Marathon SL after you get some rides on it. Did you try the Marathon XC as well?

    Purty bike.

    I'm another 8 speed holdout.

For 8 speed there are still options. Paul's thumbies and Ultegra bar cons, E-Bay, or SRAM's 7 series. They've got listed on the SRAM site that it'll work for 8 speed. So you can have your XO and eat your cake too.

Basically an XC build for a Clyde. If the above is too much for the local terrain, may switch to F100X, 4in rockers, Spider 2.1s front and rear, and custom wheelset.

    That bike looks AWESOME....

....Makes me wish I had a black fork. Those old bushing pivots look so clean. I tend to think they're aesthetically nicer than bearings. When I bought my first Marble Peak in 1995 it was the only bike that looked "finished," and much of that was due to the beauty of the pivots -- the same ones Sherwood used up until he bowed to pressure and went to bearings. The rest of the brands used hardware that looked conspicuously like it came from an erector set.

    Again, great looking bike
