Suggestions for a day away biking during my Calgary conference?

I'll be in Calgary June 25. I've hiked there a decade ago and I remember the awesome scenery. I'd love to go biking in the area. (I rented in a Pivot in Phoenix last year and it was excellent.)

My search of the forums came up empty, but maybe I just don't know where to look.

I love my Anthem 29er, but it will probably be too much of a pain to fly it out, so I'd need to rent as well. I guess I'm looking for a tour company or a rental company near good trail that wouldn't be too dangerous for a rider on his own with only a GPS. Recommendations?

    Regards, Tim

I have a book, Backcountry Biking in the Canadian Rockies written by a Canadian Nationa Park warden, now retired, Doug Eascott. Let me know what you're looking for in climbing and distance as the book has 228+ rides. Believe it's now out of print but try Rocky Mountain Books. It focuses on that area.

Thanks for the offer. I think I would need a rental/tour package anyway.

As it happens, my trip may not be happening after all so it's on my back burner.

I live in Calgary, there are few, if any tour operators for mountain biking that I know of. If you make it here, decent riding can be found within an hour of the city. Head west to Canmore, and ride at Nordic Centre for well maintained trails and a low chance of getting lost. They offer bike rentals, or you can try Sports Rent on your way out of the Calgary.

There are lots of other rides within an hour of the city (Bragg Creek area, Kananaskis, Banff) but need a bit more planning and local knowledge. In the city, you will find some basic riding, try Nose Hill, Fish Creek Park, COP Eastlands. The local bike shops can help help you out.
