6' 3'' and 225 lbs -- looking for an intro DJ bike
Anything on sale anywhere? What size wheels should I be looking for? I've watched this video:
How To ride Dirt Jumps when you Suck on Vimeo
...and he likes 24" wheels. Suspension fork or rigid?
Just buy something used. Bmx bikes are full rigid and can be had cheap. I'm your size and ride one with a 21.5" top tube. Check out the MacNeil deuce deuce for a 22" wheel bmx style bike. Most 24 or 26" mtb style DJ bikes will have a short travel suspension fork to just take the edge off. You don't really want the action, it just takes up a little more than a rigid fork. You should be able to find a Specialized P bike or similar used for a couple hundred. You won't really know what you like/don't like until you ride for a while.
Try to get a size Large. Which, in DJ terms, means 22.5"-ish actual (not effective) top tube.
Even though I grew up with BMX, I prefer a DJ 26" for dirt. And I've tried everything. 20"s, 22"s, 24"s and 26"s.
I have several 24" bmx's and they're great all-arounders, esp. if you also want to ride bmx-style street and skatepark, but for pure dirt, I grab my DJ 26.
