New question here. 2002 RFX - Which Shocks? El Terremoto geo vs. 02 RFX geo

    Hey everyone,

I'm looking to get another bike after about 2 years without one. I sold my 2002 RFX about two years ago....

I loved my RFX so I am interested in getting another. My short list is: 2002 RFX, 2005/6 RFX, 2007 RFX, and 2007 El Terremoto. I probably would prefer the longer top tube on the 05/06. I used to run my 02 with a 70mm stem and the cockpit was a little short for climbing. (although, I was running the bike with a 01 Super T and later a 03 Sherman Slider) Fork would be 66 this time around...

My main concern with the 2002 RFX is the fitment of current shocks. Will a Fox DHX 5.0 coil fit a 2002 RFX? What models of Avalanche would fit? Frame size would be a medium.

Another note...The new Ventana El Terremoto geometry seems to be very close to the 2002 RFX geometry. The El T is a little slacker by aboutg .5 degree in HA. I thought that was interesting.

    2002 RFX geometry:

    El Terremoto geometry:

    Size A B C D E F G H I J K
    S 15.4 22.4 3.75 43.7 17 30.0 13.8 67.5 73 41mm 545mm
    M 17.4 23.0 4.50 44.4 17 30.7 13.8 67.5 73 41mm 545mm
    L 19.4 24.0 4.75 45.4 17 31.3 13.8 67.5 73 41mm 545mm
    XL 21.4 24.9 5.50 46.4 17 32.7 13.8 67.5 73 41mm 545mm

    good to have you back

    KLARS,
Good to see you back on the boards! I had a very similar '02 RFX (white, Sherman Slider), and I always enjoyed seeing your build.

If you like a longer toptube the 05/06 RFX would probably be the way to go. You can get great deals on them as well (~1300- new). The new '07 RFX looks pretty sweet and will save you some weight....probably a bit better climber due to the ST angle.

Shocks....I know the Avalanche Chubbie will fit all models, and it is a very sweet shock. i am pretty sure the DHX will fit Med, and Large '02 frames....not sure about the smalls. Go for the Avalanche if you can afford it.

The El terremoto looks pretty sweet on paper. I have not seen one though.

    Keep us posted.

    TG

You can't wrong with any of those frames. Personally I'd opt for the '05 RFX seeing as how they're currently available and they're a steal at ~$1300 brand spankin' new.

Thanks TG - Good to be back. I have been lurking for the last couple of months. I was watching the great deals on the 06 RFX...Didn't pull the trigger though. I agree the El Terremoto looks great on paper. However, I always liked the bushings on the turner. I'm up in the Pacific Northwest and the RFX bushings held up really well. Not sure on the bearings on the Ventana but I am guessing they are sealed really well.

The Ventana would be almost 2x the price of the 06 RFX - Not sure it is worth it.

Another note - I guess the geometry on the 2002 RFX change change quite a bit with rocker config. I believe my 2002 had the 'B' rockers - I was running 2.6" Gazz w/o contact with the seattube.

I think the geometry chart above was for 'B' rockers. I reviewed the threads on the rocker configurations.

Did anyone ever confirm how close 05/06 RFX rockers were to the original 'A' rockers?

I know I'm all over the place here, but can someone list the changes between the 05 6-pack and the 06 RFX?

I know about the change from Horst to TNT but was there any other changes?

FYI an 07 RFX can be had for around $1500 shipped if you call around......and a new 06 RFX for $1100 (plenty of Large but no size Medium anywhere as far as I can tell)
