I purchased a used 02 that had a 105mm Marathon S. After learning the bike was built for an 80mm fork I purchased a Fox RLC 100 (Larry, at Mtn High Cycles was a great help). Turns out the Fox has a much shorter axle to crown distance then the S (think about 10mm). I left the Fox at 100mm (Larry's recommendation) knowing 80mm travel was available. I also put on a set of XCE rockers (not the Romic version). These changes transformed the bike and I attribute most of the change to the fork. The bike feels much better balanced. With the Marathon S the front wheel would get light, sometimes lift off the ground, on tight uphill sections. Now, the front is frimly planted. I don't have any experience with 80mm fork on the bike but hope this is of some help. My guess is you could use a 100mm fork with even the stock rockers successfully. Take an axle to crown measurement of your current setup and compare to 100mm forks you are considering. I am amazed how bike characteristics can change so dramatically with changes of a few millimeters. Good luck.
