Where do you typically adjust your front shock on your Trek 3900?

I am a newbie MTBer riding in Connecticut, lots of uphills, minor rocks, roots, dirt, etc...trails that are considered to be intermediate level. Where do you typically adjust your front shock on your Trek 3900? What shall I do to set the front shock where you suggest, turn the dial on the fork all the way to the left and then how many clicks to the right

Is there a plus or minus signs (+,-) on the fork? Typically, you you want less shock when climbing a hill as it eases in controling your ascend, more shock softness as you peddle down a hill. Hope this helps.
