    Trek Scratch cracked chainstays

It's a common problem and Trek is aware of it. 3 yr. warranty on chainstays.

The new and improved chainstays are similar to the ones that come on the Slash. No welded bosses on the drive side where the cracks begin. I love my Scratch. It's a good bike.

I wonder if these cracks are due more to shear stress... Which would make the issue less about big drops and more about the torque/torsion acting through the swing arm from the BB and rear axle. Basically the wheel's imparting a twisting force that's tearing open the swing arm.

Hard to see but the revised chainstay is all black and doesn't have the welded cable guide bosses on the drive side. You need to check with your dealer for availability.
