The BB doesn't get tightened if there is play. There might be a small chance your cups could do with a tweak if its an external BB model. Play either means that crankarms are loose, so the crank bolt needs to be torqued or that the bearings are shot and need replacing.

I am assuming you are talking about a bottom bracket on a '91 trek 830?

    Prob not

    Name the bike and spec.

Any modern bike has sealed bearing bb. They are not able to be tightened unless the bearing cups are loose in the frame. If that is not the case then the entire bb needs to be replaced, cups and all.

If you have a modern press fit bearing, take it to your shop to retain your warranty. It may need a new bearing, "glue", or an oversize bearing fix.

But, what bike and spec are we talking.

I believe the BB shell is threaded on your bike and you have cups with bearings threaded into the frame. It depends what is loose. There is no way to actually tighten the BB itself.

You can tighten the cups into the frame with the right tool if they are loose. Right hand side is left hand thread.

You can tighten the crank arms as well. Here again you need the right tool.

Knowing how to do it is also important. There are certain steps and torque ratings for tightening.

You can go to YouTube and search for Shimano Hollowtech II Install and the videos will give you an idea of how to do this.

Of course there is always going into the LBS and letting the mechanic look at it. It might be something simple and cheap.
