    Trek 6700 a good buy?

Total neophyte to the sport; Going to ride bumps, trails but no major downhill stuff.
Saw a 2005 Trek 6700 for $500; supposed to be "like new". Good bike to start?

$500 for a $1000 bike? Yeah, sounds like a good start. Go ride it if you can. For most people starting out, you just need to go ride the bike and see what feels good. For me, that has been Treks. Other people don't care for them. Everybody's different. If you ride it and like it, that's really all you need to know. The 6700 (of any recent year) is a bike that you won't need to upgrade for a while.

Welcome to the sport. See you on the trails.

The 6700 has definitely been one of my faves in the Trek lineup. I almost regret getting my current hardtail instead of the 07 6700.
