I know I can cut it but wanted to know if it would be better to swap it out for more comfort and also to shed some weight. Any recommendations anyone?
ncruz, I've got a '11 Paragon (Stealth Grey Paint Job) that came with the somewhat maligned 17 degree big sweep bars. I cut mine to fit my perception of what works and would recommend you consider cutting yours before buying replacements (even if you are buying replacements anyway) to see what you like (width wise). If you cut your stock bars too narrow, you can fix that with the planned replacement, if you cut your replacement bars too narrow you're buying a third set. I'm a big believer in my bars supporting a "neutral wrist" position where the wrist is neither turned inward or outward and where the wrist is not bent with fingers on the controls (in your primary riding position you should be able to lay a flat edge (ruler) along the forearm and back of the hand and approximate a straight line. I've used risers and non-risers, always with at least 10 degrees of sweep.
The most expensive bike in the world is still cheaper than the cheapest open heart surgery.

A little late to reply to this, but when I switched from my 3x10 to XX1, my bike dropped a little over 800 grams.

All changes are to make it more my style, not for a performance upgrade necessarily, although the brakes are major upgrades.

    X9 rear derailleur
    X0 gripshift
Hope Tech3 E4 front brake, Tech 3 X2 rear brake
    203mm rotors front and rear
    XR4 front tire
I did dump the large ring, since I am not nearly strong enough to need it. Added a RaceFace bash guard.

Otherwise stock. I tried the triggers, just could not get used to them, so I had to go with a Sram rear derailleur. I have always liked gripshift. The shifters are 3x10, even though I did remove the large ring. If I find I eventually need the large ring, I will toss it on, and can still use the shifters!
After that, the Shimano brakes would NOT fit in a safe manner (I figured they woulnd't) so I was going to get a set of Hayes Prime experts, but instead decided to splurge on the brakes with large rotors.
I LOVE the XR4 tire on my 26" Fuel EX9, so I knew I wanted that tire up front.

New commuter/rehab bike - broke my leg a month ago trail riding. Scored it rediculous cheap and have a rigid fork and super moto tires on the way. Dont dig road bikes, and a 29er will be way cooler.

Funny you posted the second pic haha, we will have similar builds. Are they Big Apples? Looks like it - I have some Super Motos on the way and a carbon fork. With slx crank, narrow wide and xtr rear mech.

Here is the best phone pic - its without BB now. All the parts are trickling in this week. Really stoked.

I'm using conti xkings. They aren't s beefy as maxxis ardents, or bontrager tr's, but they are like Velcro on the trail. Anything is better than the tires that came on my SF elite. Garbage !!!

I have the same bike and immediately upgraded to the bontrager's 29-3 team issue tires (the shop I go to only carries Trek stuff so I'm not familiar with other brands so much). But I love the 3s (I think they've been renamed XR3 now). I live in New England so rocky, rooty trails but these tires are still great in wet and dry conditions and absolutely rail turns. But as always, I recommend talking to your LBS and seeing what they feel is best.

It's all about where you live and trail conditions. I'm in AL and it's humid and the trails are super dry. So the contis are perfect for me. So like Kevin said, hit up your LBS

My LBS sells a lot of Maxxis Ignitors, so I have taken their advice and run them on my Superfly FS 9. I'm no expert, but I like them for leafy, rooty, rocky terrain. It came with Bontrager XR1 Team Issue, which work well for me with dry, packed dirt and gravel.

Mine aren't really beefier but I love them for my XC Pacific NW riding. I run Specialized S-Works Ground Control 2.1 front and back.

Although this season I'm thinking of swapping the rear for a Maxxis but I can't decide which.

I'm riding a completely stock 2011 Marlin, got it and love it! Now, thanks to all of ya'll on mtbr, I have the upgrade bug. Any ideas for some "must" upgrades? Btw I live in New Orleans and ride muddy trails since it rains constantly.

    Trek 29er's roll call

Just picked up an X-Caliber 6. Haven't been on a bike since 2007 and haven't been on a hard tail since 2009. Have about 40miles on it so far and it's been interesting. Wasn't sure what to expect from it being low spec, I've never owned such a low spec bike but finances right now won't allow anything nicer. Let's see how long I can keep this one for.

Anything Stan's is good. You can find them on eBay with tires and ready to roll for around $400. That's what I did on my other bike before I sold it.

I really enjoy the ride. Handles terrain really nice. Changed the saddle, specialized white pedals, added some fenders and Lizard skin grips (not seen).
Mainly use it for XC, some downhill and moderate jumps.

Got this 2013 Rumblefish late last year. First time on a 29er and I like it. Already have a few upgrades and I am waiting for more in the mail.
Already installed are XT shifters, ENVE bar and seatpost, WTB Silverado saddle XTR cassette with Wolftooth 42tooth cog and ODI XTrainer grips, and I converted to tubeless.
Waiting for I9/Stans Arch wheels, Race Face 30tooth NW ring, XTR crank and XTR rear derailleur.
    Trek 29er's roll call-img_20140524_223646.jpg

My fork was part of the recall, and I have a few rides on the new damper, and I must say it is a world of difference. CTD actually does something, and I get just about full travel, still dialing the pressure.

    2013 Trek Marlin

    Owner: Cody
    Location: South Eastern Wisconsin
Bike/Setup: 2013 Trek Marlin - Stock except for the pedals and gel seat cover
How long have you owned it: 2 Days
Thoughts so far: Haven't taken it to a trail yet, so I am not sure how it will ride. But I took it for a 30 mile road cruise today and it performed better than expected!
Cons so far: The brakes suck, definitely need to upgrade.

My hard tail is a 2011 Cobia, my full suspension is a 2013 Super Fly AL 100. Have only took the SF on 2 rides but I am well pleased with it. At my age the suspension sure does make a big difference, I'm almost 56 years young.

My fully upgraded TREK Paragon 29" 2011

Greetings, I should have found this thread earlier, so here is my TREK 29", : Paragon 2011 29" frame.
It a great bike. Fast, stable and excellent handling. G2 geometry really works! With upgrades it rides even better, especially wheels, ceramic bearings BB and brakes! I guess the only stock components are the head set and brake discs.
    My major upgrades:
    - normal bars and Ergon grips,
    - Specialized BG seat,
    - Shimano XT BR785 2012 brakes,
    - wheels: WTB Stryker TCS Cross Country 29” 2012 - most important upgrade
    - SRAM X9 3x10 GXP cranks with SRAM pressfit ceramic
    - fork: Rockshox SID XX 29" G2 100mm 15mm tapered, 2012
    - SRAM 1070 casset
    - SRAM X0 type 2 rear derailerur 2013
    - SRAM X0 shifters 2013

Soon to be in my possession: 17 1/2 inch 2015 X-Cal 8. Already have Shimano Saint pedals coming (already have Shimano SPDs), Ergon grips/bar ends I already have, along with another saddle if the stock one does not work for me.

@ avmech. Can't wait for real pics. I, too, plan to get an Xcal 8, just not the black model.

I love it. I've had it through about 30 miles and the only problem I've had was with some wheel truing. It's fast compared to what I had before. I'm a been though so don't know enough to describe it. Drive train is more than what I need and shifts fast and clean.

A local bike shop has a 29er X Cal 9 2014 for $1,000. Before I heard of that deal, I was decided on the 2015 X cal 8 (same price). I do see that the X Cal 9 2014 has better brakes while also boasting an XC32, but air-based. Which would you guys go for?

On that platform, I would take better brakes, and an air spring fork any day of the week.

TREK X-call 2014 and 2015 frames are identical,so if the 2014 x-call 9 and 2015 x-call 8 are for the same price, then go for the 2014 x-call 9, simply better components for the same price. Fork is really important and brakes as well.

The biggest advantage I see from the X Cal 8 2015 is the tubeless ready rims and possibly the 2X drivetrain (though not really for me since I do like to get some speed on the roads).

I have a 3x system on my road bike, and it isn't as smooth or nice at high speeds going down hills. I prefer to either coast in the middle ring and the highest gear, or the big ring and half way down the cassette.
Also, why do you ride road on your mountain bike? It isn't designed for that, therefore you don't need a big ring. A third ring also adds weight (its what the weight weenies say).

The air based spring will be a much bigger upgrade over a coil spring in the fork. I'd go with 9.

I am slumming with my Marlin 5, which is now absolutely stock. With the places I am riding it is super capable. I need to get it to some good trails. Actually I will be doing the best riding on my department store Schwinn because I am taking it to the ranch and there are some pretty interesting roads out there.

I'll try to post a photo soon.

    Hi ConchoBill,
Picked up a 2015 Marlin 5 last week. Hope you love yours as much as I love mine. All stock as well, Awesome on single track and gravel as that's all I've road so far. (I'm a noob to MTB) Hitting Bethpage State Park on Long Island NY this week and it should be a little more of a challenge, then what I road last week.

Lmao, yea definitely no dirt on mine or anything else because that pictures from the day it came home. I'm eventually going to upgrade to the Raidon fork, just don't have the funds atm. I now have a seat pack, frame pump and bottle holder. I'll take a new pic after this weekend because I'm going to hit the trails hard!

Amazon tells me that I just received this saddle at my house:
    Amazon.com : Avenir Men's 100 Series Mountain Saddle (Black/Silver) : Bike Saddles And Seats : Sports & Outdoors
So it will be added to my dirty Trek Marlin 29er.

ConchiBill, I'd like to see a pic with the Raidon fork on the bike. Can you put one up?

I never saw a bike that looked anything like that!

Matty, being the tech idiot I am, I can't get my photos small enough in mbs to post, or I cannot understand how to post photos here. That is why no photo.

    2012 Superfly 100 Pro - 24.0 pounds

    With the 115mm G2 fork - it preforms about 90% of what a 2015 Fuel EX9 does:

My TREK Superfly 5, 2014 fully upgraded

My TREK Superfly 5 2014 upgraded; I upgraded practically everything. I mainly wanted that frame.
    most important upgrades:

wheelset: WTB Stryker TCS Cross Country Race 29″
fork: Fox 32 Float 100mm Terralogic Kashima
    brakes: Shimano XT BR-M785
    shifters: X7 and X9 2x10 Type 2
crankset: X9 28/42 GXP with SRAM press fit ceramic
    casset: SunRace MX3 CHAMPAGNE 10sp 11-40

Now I am deciding how to convert to 12x142
