Picked this up just by chance at one of th LBS in town. Super nice bike, tires are getting changed out though, way too skinny

I've had a 2012 Mamba for about a year now and still loving it. Question for those more experienced with racing: I'm looking to upgrade my bike in an attempt to make it lighter/faster, if you could upgrade one thing, what would it be? I'm a grad student so money is definitely an object and I'm looking to get the most value for what I can get out of it. Thanks for your thoughts.

Can you stand to lose some weight? It would be free and probably most bang for your buck.

If not, a lighter wheelset/racing tire combo would probably be your best bet. Troll ebay/craigslist for a deal. If you're not actually racing, lightweight tires are probably a bad idea.

I'm already pretty light and I think if I were much lighter I'd border into the "unhealthy looking" range. I'll troll for some wheels. Thanks for the advice.

Light wheels are a world of difference on a 29er. That would be the first place to start.

Go tubeless and try and find a good deal on a light wheelset.

I totally agree. Wheelsets are a must. Depending on what you are looking for and what your budget allows, I would recommend 29-inch Mountain Wheels. Currently I am using ZTR Arch's since I like to ride aggressive.

Try out the 29er components section of this forum, for more information. There are countless options, depending on your budget, riding style etc.
You can go for a fully custom hand built set or just as well be happy with a second hand set of factory wheels.

Based on my own experience, I'm quite happy with the Bontrager TLR system, riding the stock Race Lites on my SF100 at the moment. This is my first set of "modern" Bontrager wheels, my first non-v-brake set. Only did about 250km on the new bike so can't really say anything about reliability yet.
I've had a set of custom built ZTR/DT240 wheels on my 26" bike, now running a similar set on my singlespeed. Must say those DT240s are the best hubs I've ever owned, durable, easy maintenance and they can take a beating. ZTR Rims, I have the Arch, have been very reliable as well, never had any issues.
But when you go for a custom set, find a good wheel builder, their craftsmanship and experience is what turns good components into a spectacular wheel!

These look amazing! Do you know anything about the Crest wheels? They look exactly what I'm looking for.

Bought a 2013 Mamba and enjoying it so far. I have been riding motorcycles since the 80s, but thought I would add a mountain bike to my fitness routine instead of just going to the gym.

Stache 7. So far this thing has been everything a trail bike should be, and makes me question wether I'll ever want a full suspension bike for a XC/trail ride. I don't think I've given up anything on this bike with as to cross country riding, and I've gained a ton with regard to being able to chew through technical sections of trail.

    Trek 29er's roll call

I've put about 60 miles so far on my Stache 7 and it fits my style and type of riding perfectly. Next upgrade: tubeless

Will do, I can only compare it to a few bikes, but I am taking it out today to give it a try, I'll come back on and let you know what I think.
