Nice fuel. I've given up on mine, north tx has rained non stop for two months, all trails are closed, a lot of them are probably so damaged they won't be ridden for months, rivers are out of the banks, and so on. I've been on my road bike non stop lately. I mean we needed a normal year of rain, not 20 inches over in the first 5 month.

I'm in Australia and we don't get alot of rain in winter. Just perfectly clear days conducive to mtbing. This is at Mt Stromlo in Canberra, one of the best mountain bike areas in Australia. They host 24hr world championship here aswell.

The fuel just laps up the terrain. The reaktiv shock is just so responsive that I just aim the bike down hill and away I go.

    Just such a smashing bike.

Is that the new 2016 EX 8? If so would love a review (or link to one in another thread).

    Yup, it's a '16 EX 8...

The good stuff: Immediately converted to tubeless before even rolling it out of the house. $20 worth of valve stems along with some Bontrager TLR that I already had sitting around and I'm tubeless. Suspension is great and while I haven't ridden the Fox34, I really don't have any complaints about the 32 fork like others have mentioned. I had a great ride over the weekend with some big rock downhill sections and it tracked straight (link set in high position) without any deflection. Rear suspension is a bit stiff using Trek's recommended PSI but I don't mind. I'm mostly riding Arizona desert trails and still dialing in the right PSI.

The bad: front derailuer needs some work. I haven't spent much time on it but I can't get both high and low settings correct. Also the rear brake either needs to be bled or it's just not as grippy as I want. The initial bite is just not there. Hopefully bleeding or a pad change will help get the feel I want.

Overall the bike is awesome and I'm glad I went with the EX. No buyers remorse here.

It could be the pads are contaminated, which was the case with my last bike when I picked it up. I could hold the rear brake and still turn the wheel with my hand (while bike was in stand). I ended up replacing the pads but it may be worth trying to clean the rotor and pads - Google it. But as the bike is brand new this should be fixed by the shop where you bought it (assuming you trust them to do it properly - I didn't).

Nice bike! Is it 27.5 or 29? I'm debating between them. I'm 5'6". Should be the 15.5 frame.

Rear rotors on the Fuels are small in my experience. Even when working well not going to have as much stopping power on the rear. Although may also need a bleed based on what you are describing.

Well, my Fuel EX 9.8 showed up yesterday and I'm out of town. Won't be able to get it until Monday.

But it showed up 3 weeks early compared to the original estimate, so it's hard to complain.

Well are you going to describe the upgrades? I have the same bike and would love to know. ;)
  • 11-10-2015

Absolutely! One of the obvious upgrades was to the suspension. I put a kashima upgrade on the upper of the fork, swapped the damper to a 2016 fit damper, also went with the kashima upgrade on the shock, don't notice any stiction anymore, though I'm sure there's some. XT shifters, XT brakes, ice tech pads and rotors, XT crank, XT front derailleur, 29" Stan's Flows laced up to Chris King hubs, and Maxxis tires. Also thinking about going with a shorter stem too.

I also put an XT cassette on, 2x10 setup which im really liking. And the shifters make a huge difference!

    Nice!

Mine is stock apart from the pedals and I added a Rockshox Dropper post at the time of purchase. Didn't ride as much over winter as intended due to illness and other commitments but now that it's spring I'm starting to get out regularly and loving it. A fork upgrade might be in my future but right now I'm enjoying the bike as it is.

    Happy trails. ;)

first time on trail since I got this bike almost 2 weeks ago. Been raining a lot here in TX. Man this thing moves, rode 12 miles not really trying to go fast just having fun, broke 7 of my stava PR's some by as much as 40 seconds. Big bonus as well, I wasn't beat up and tired at the end either, if it stayed light out longer or if I had a light I could have easily rode another 10 miles. Loving it.

My Son's Trek Fuel EX :D

I managed to get it from 30.5 to 27 pounds by upgrading wheelset to tubeless, carbon bars, and swapping out Deore components to XT, and the cassette to XTR.

He is 9 years old and about 48". works fine for him though. I swapped out bars and a 50mm stem. I am about to pick up a 80mm dropper post for him too :D

My 2015 Fuel EX 9 29er in 17.5" size. Picked this up about 6 months ago, drove 6 hours one way to pick this up from Philadelphia to Boston. Well worth the adventure and the bike has been great. I came off of a 2014 X-Caliber 6 which I wanted to put a 1x drivetrain, better wheels, and an air fork. For the same $1500 I got this whole (and amazing) bike, and sold my X-Cal for $425 locally. Only thing I added was a Push 7cc shock volume spacer, replaced the 80mm Race Lite stem with a 90mm Rhythm Pro, and added carbon bars (not seen in this shot)

'17 EX 8. Just picked it up yesterday. I ditched the dropper and front mech from the start and put on a Wolftooth 32T oval narrow-wide. Had some single track close by so I swung in right after leaving the bike shop. This things an animal. Still needed some suspension set-up but had a riot in the short time I had. Did all of that today and hope to go find the trail Saturday!

Did your LBS already have it in stock? Ordered mine early July, Trek says I wont get it until November...
