    New Bontrager wheels

Anyone see or read up much on the new wheels from bontrager?

Bontrager Rhythm Comp TLR Disc 29 Wheel NEW! - All-Mountain 29in. - Wheels - Components -Trek Store

I am thinking of upgrading my stock wheels to these or maybe a set of stans arch ex (stans hubs) later this year.

I got these wheels this year. I love em. I was looking at the same options and I'm glad I went with these. They've stood up to everything including some hard crashes and the typical wear and tear of New England riding and racing.

I assume you are talking about the new rhythm comps that were released in the past month or so? What wheels did they replace?

That's correct. They replaced the stock AT-850s on my mamba.

My friend also tested out the new top notch elite wheels at Trek World last month and said those are just mind blowing. Seems like bontrager is really stepping up their game after some less than stellar reviews in the past.

I have wondered how much better or efficient the new comps or stans arch ex would be compared to my dusters on my Fuel 29er?

That same friend (who works for Trek) said when I was buying that any after market wheel (from bontrager) that you buy would be a big improvement over any wheel that comes stock on a bike. The only except would be the top of the line Superfly which already comes with a RXL wheel.

I may stop in my lbs and talk to them about the comp wheel set. I think one of them went to trek world. I need a 12x142 rear and and 15qr front. Do you remember what msrp was for a set?

$600 MSRP for a set but unless your bike shop has a pair in stock, you won't be able to order right now because the only thing in stock from dexter (the trek distributor) is the front wheel which runs $280 MSRP. You could get the Elite rear wheel which has a $520 MSRP.

Yea I saw that on the trek website. They should be able to backorder a set. I wonder how the bontragers will compare to stans?

I can't speak when it comes to the stans because I have never used them, but i have been on the new carbon Rhythm Pros for about a month now on my remedy 29er. They are the bees knees, with the bonty tubeless strip the seal with a floor pump! I also have the bonty XXX wheels that were just released and I only have 1 ride on them but they are equally great.

Considering how good the tubeless setups actually are from Bontrager, and the fact the new hubs are 5 or 6 degree, that's not a bad price at all!
I have been waiting to check a set out asap myself.

Some info here. The 2014 Rhythm comps and elites and Pros are on NEW hubs and rims.
The new comp is NOT anything like the old one. Same for the elites and Pros.

I think MSRP was around 550-600 for the comps. I "work" at the shop (I lead group rides out of there in exchange for discounts and tune ups) so I paid under 500 for them. Definitely helps to have an in with independent dealers!

I talked to my LBS. It seems like a wheel in the $600 area would not be a big upgrade over my current set. Yes they would be better but not worth the $. They suggested I would have to spend around $800-$1000 to get enough of an upgrade to be worth it. Basically they said my current wheels already have a bearing and engagement set up close to what is on the comps.
I think I am going to wait on wheels....I am not comfortable spending $800+ on wheels.

    Hi, guys.

I have the 2014 Bontrager Rhythm Comp 29er wheels with the XX1 hub. Where may I look to convert it to a 10 speed hub?

Is the hub made by DT SWISS?

    Re: New Bontrager wheels

The hub is NOT dt swiss. A trek dealer should be able to order the right freehub. Let me see if I can find a part number for you

Thanks, Duke. I was told by Bontrager support it is all DT internals including the free hub.

    Well here goes nothing!

    Freehub 427334. $100

Badnews is you may need 426843 $30 also(134/142 end caps. In the 2014 rhythm comp 29 tech doc it says the xx1 freehub has it's own axle ends caps.

Also, unless dt switched to a 3 pawl system i don't think the comp is dt internals.

They are DT Onyx-style internals - 3 pawl. i have an old set of Race-lites that feature the same DT-swiss 3-pawl mechanism.

I thought the dt onyx were actually two pawl..at least every old rhythm elite hub and race lite mtb hub that I have. Which is a total of 4 wheels for some reason..

You may be right - i just looked at Trek's tech site and they mention that the pre-2014 Rhythm Elite is the Onxy freehub, but do not say that the Rhythm Comps are.

I know old comps are a different hub. Same freehub as old Race hubs.

They changed so much in the wheels for 2014....basically everything.
