    I ordered a 2015 Remedy 9 29er but am considering the Remedy 9.8 instead.

The 9.8 is about two pounds lighter but I prefer the "Gulf Oil Porsche" color scheme of the 8.

I test rode an 18.5" Remedy 9.8 and really liked it but the reach was maybe a centimeter short, which makes me think the 19" Remedy 8 that I ordered might be a perfect fit without any stem swap. I wonder how having a slightly longer stem might affect the handling of the 9.8?

I saw that kosmo has ridden both versions and feels that although the carbon is not a huge difference it is definitely noticeably better. Has anyone else ridden both? What's your impression of the carbon vs. aluminum feel?

In summary, $750 more buys me a two pound savings with a carbon ride but I might need a longer stem and I don't like the black/red color as much as the blue/orange.

    Opinions?

The 9.8 can be ridden with wider bars to soak up some of that reach or go with a 19.5. It has almost the same reach as a 9.
And negotiate a little off the price to get that 750 down. I'm sure you mean the 9 not the 8 for price.

Good idea to negotiate, but assuming the prices are set it sounds as if you think the 9.8 would be worth the upgrade?

I would be looking at a 9.8, 2 lbs is a lot, or an Evil Following if I wanted to spend a little less.

Last year I was looking at the aluminum vs carbon Santa Cruz Tallboy. I figured there was no way I could gain the 1.5# difference for the added $800-900 difference in cost between the two. So I bought the carbon version. If your budget can handle it, and weight is important to you, do it. Stems are cheap to swap, and some shops will do so for nothing on a new bike.

Regarding color - I have never/will never buy or not buy a bike because of the color scheme. Function over form....and you can repaint it after a few years of abuse if it matters that much.

The Trek website shows the price difference between the 8 and the 9.8 to be about $2200 bucks. If you can upgrade for $750 that's a great deal.

edit: Blue orange is the 9 not the 8. Still a $1000 difference in price. Don't know how its 2 lbs lighter. the frame difference should be about half of that.

    +1

I have found that the weight difference between frames of the same size, aluminum to carbon is at most 1lb. I looked into this quite a bit before I purchased a fuel 9.8, which should be arriving this weekend. That was on a 23" frame. Smaller frames would have less of a difference.

Sorry, I meant the Remedy 9, not 8. Thanks for the correction. I just edited the title.

You guys are making a lot of good points so far.

My LBS has a price difference of $750 between the two. The 18.5" Remedy 9.8 that they have in stock is marked as "27.0 pounds." I've read online that the 9 comes in at 29-something pounds. Do any of you guys have a measured weight on the 19" 9?

How about the difference in ride feel between carbon and aluminum? I've never owned a carbon frame.

    Francis measured 26.7# on a medium 9.8:

    Just as a reference, my 9.8 29er is 28.0 lb. 21" frame. My 19.5" Fuel EX8 29er was just a hair over 28 lb.

    That bike kicks @$$!

I think that color scheme is better than the blue orange and will stay new looking for longer.

Right on, guys! I think you're correct about the color longevity. I'm partial to loud, bright, and bold colors so the blue/orange really drew me in. However, I wanted the lighter weight and to experience the carbon ride that I always read about, and you can never go wrong with black.

I'm a big fan of the blue/orange scheme on the 9, however the 9.8 looks really awesome in person. The carbon fiber really looks cool.

Yeah, the 9 looks better in person than in pictures, but the raw carbon is nice to see!

They call the color carbon smoke. So is it like a tinted clear coat you can see the carbon through, or more like paint?

My Santa Cruz is called black carbon, and I thought it was "raw" but its actually a charcoal gray paint.

I cannot tell if it is tinted clear or not, but the carbon is fully visible. I can see the joints and carbon uniqueness in mine.

OP - how much was yours then? (If you don't mind!) Since you said it was only $750 above the 9.

I don't think I can capture the appearance well with my phone camera, but it's a glossy clearcoat over bare carbon. The carbon looks like a silky fine mesh weave rather than the typical carbon basketweave you see elsewhere. I see how Trek can call the carbon "smoke" because the weave is wispy like smoke. It does look really awesome in person.

    Here's what I got:
